Experience in University of Twente, Netherlands by Luisa
Generally, what is University of Twente like?
The University of Twente is a young university that is ambitious in spreading the word about it. I think that life as a student at Utwente (how we say it) is fun and demanding at the same time. The most important thing I learned during my time at the University of Twente is to organize myself because the work load should not be underestimated. Still, I would recommend the University.
What are the facilities like?
The facilities are amazing, everything is newly renovated and equipped with high quality technical materials. The campus is beautiful and there are many nice study areas and group work rooms available to accomodate the students.
What are the tutors like?
Depends on the tutors I would say, some are great and very helpful, some confuse more than they help. In general I would say that there are more good tutors than bad ones.
Are the lessons easy in University of Twente?
No, definitely not. However, they are mostly very interesting. But it is expected that students work at least 40 hours on their studies per week, which is in reality often not enough to cover the necessary activities, at least during the first year courses. Again, I would say it depends on the course you are taking and on the subjects you are good at. For me, microeconomics was not as easy to understand as political science, but that is linked to my personal preferences and talents.
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
The university organizes lots of activities, mainly through the study associations that also provide students with the materials for the classes. From skiing trips to formal events, there is always an activity planned by these associations. Students can also become a member of the association and plan their own events.
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
Again, depends on the teacher. But in general I would say yes. I have to mention that now, that I have been studying at URJC, I have come to especially really appreciate my Dutch professors' great English skills! Also, class seems a bit more structured and not so one-sided, there are always PowerPoint presentations that allow students to recap the class contents at home and which make it much easier to follow the class. Also, classes are held on a more personal level and professors are much more easily accessible for questions and students' issues.
Are there any stories you can share?
To anyone attending Utwente, I would recommend taking part in the EuroSim, a simulation of decision-making on EU level, that is organised by Mr. Rosema, a very good political science professor. I took part in 2014 and very much enjoyed the experience.

Is the University of Twente far from the city center? How long does it take to go from the university to the city center?
Thank you!
