What is the student lifestyle like in Uppsala?

Uppsala is one of the best student cities! Uppsala has the oldest Swedish University, due to this fact, there are 13 students clubs in the city called "Nations". The nations are named after Swedish counties. In the past they connected students from these counties. Every nation is different and offers various things - library, party place, restaurant, pub... When you become a member of any nation, you can use all of them. Then your week can look like this:

  • Monday: party in Norrlands nation.
  • Tuesday: karaoke in Göteborgs nation.
  • Wednesday: spela night (everybody can play on stage) in Kalmar nation.
  • Thursday: traditional pea soup, waffles and nice pub in Upplands nation.
  • Friday: big party in Värmlands nation, etc.

Hard to choose, there are always many things going on in Uppsala! Especially the beginning of the semester is crazy!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Uppsala to other students?

Yes!

What is the food like?

I didn't find any good Swedish meal. Pastries are nice, especially kanelbullars!

Everybody cooks for themself at home, Swedish and foreign students too. I think even the professors bring their own food and at the lunch break everybody warms up the food in microwaves in the kitchens, which are available in every corner of the university.

How much does it cost to live in Uppsala?

A lot!

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?

There are language courses. I participated in the EILC course and learnt Swedish quickly! Shame you don't really need it because most of the people speak English fluently.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Uppsala?

Nations.; )

Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Uppsala?

Be ready to bicycle every day in any kind of weather (there are winter tires for bikes as well; )) As Swedes learn this quote already in kindergarten: "There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing". Be prepared.
