DIARY of PARADISE, #The Day 2

January 25, 2013

OK. So it´s pretty hot, super humid and kinda lonely over here. It seems like I was almost alone. Speaking only a bit of french, I do not really intervene to a conversation between any random people I meet, so I think I will have to use start using english even though I didn´t want to. I think I pretty much overestimated myself. The first night I went for a little walk around the university. There is nothing around. Just school, international residence-the place where I stay, a playground, a hall for sports and a little coffee room with some snacks. I was walking alone and I saw some people in the apartements next to our building. They started to yell something and I realized that actually, the were asking ME if I wanted to come over to their party. Well, I said "oui", because I was not really sure what else they´re talking about. Suddanly a girl came down to pick me up and she took me to a hall where a few people were having a little party. She spoke english quite well but the others didn´t. Anyway, I was glad to be between some people and to be listening to french. I must have given a really weird impression to themb because I was just sitting there, not saying anything at all, smiling like a silly girl trying hard to understand at least few words ( I didn´t though) and after an hour and half I gave them my thanks and I left. They got pretty scared with their faces shocked when I told them that I didn´t have a key from my room yet, so I put my bed right next to the door so nobody strong enough can open it.

I was super hungry and I felt a bit insecured. Plus I couldn´t sleep because first of all, I slept all day long that day and the second, there was somebody or rather SOMETHING alive in my room doing a weird sound. It was like knocking or what. The same sound the bouy from my childhood used to do when they didn´t want to ring  on our bell but they wanted me to come out on the balcony.

So today it´s the second day. The good thing is that I am able to wake up in the early morning because I my body is still working according to european time. I met some erasmus girls. A blond from England and one from Germany. They speak very good french!!! Awesome...I feel so stupid. The girls were really nice, they took me to school and we did our registration. It´s soooo EXOTIC! The school, the people, the teachers, everything around is so different. So now I am an official student of University of New Caledonia on an island of 200 000 people in South Pacific, as I got this student card with the worst photo of mine I´ve ever had. Awesome. We went to the city so to a little shopping. If I had the impression that Tokyo, where I stopped by for a day, was expensive,it means I really had no clue what the prices of goods would be here. I knew it´s gonna be an expensive trip...but 1 kg of tomatoes- 7 Euro?!!! I am pretty shocked. Life here is really expensive and I was just in the grocery shop.

I liked the city center. It looks like a modern Cuba-I mean, I ´ve never been to Cuba, but this is how I imagine it from the pictures. I feel so happy about those palm trees EVERYWHERE! I am excited about everything I see. I feel like a child again. Like I went to withdraw some cash and it was a pretty nice surprise, when those huge papers came out. They are as exotic as the whole island. I can´t believe those are real money:D! They are designed by palms, people with flowers in their hair, sea, fish, shells, sand...simply amazing.
And the people seem sooooo nice. I can´t wait to the other erasmus students. This is definitelly going to be the best 4,5 months in my life.
