The winter is divided in the European Capital of Culture year of Umea 2014, following the Sami calendar in 2 periods: from December to March and from then to April. The first period, December – March, is named as the Winter [Dálvvie]. This period of the year is going to be “the Caring time of year;, since during this time the cultural activities are going to be based in topics like the human rights, children, minorities and space. Among the activities, one of the most important will be the creation of a symphony in 8 movements, the same number as the seasons of the calendar. It will interpreted several times along the Culture year by different composers. At the end of the year, in December, the complete symphony performance will culminate. The opening ceremony will provide an overview of all the cultural activities in the Cultural year. Between March – April the season of Late winter [Gijrradálvvie] takes place. This season will be the;Awakening time of year; in the cultural calendar. In this period there will be multiple presentations. One to be highlighted will be the Rock Art in Sami Land.
