The summer in the European Capital of Culture year of Umea 2014

The activities during the European Capital of Culture year of Umea 2014 follow a scheduled program. It is based on the Sami calendar which divides the year in 8 seasons according to the nature cycles. Summer is the period most waited in Sweden. The light, the sun and the warm is what most define it. According to the Sami calendar, it will be divided into the period of June – July and the period of August. The first period is called Giessie [Summer] and will represent the;Contemplation time of year;. The base of the season will be the light – day and night. A relaxed and generous atmosphere will be created in accordance with mood. It will be the time for crazy and almost never-ending party and events. The river will play an important role during the summer. The month of August is Tjakttajagiessie, or the Late summer season. This period is the;Harvesting time of year;. The activities will be focused on different types of narrative, impressions and expressions, which will be brought by people from all over Europe. There will be also an important European Football Festival of young players.
