As an indigenous people with its own culture and language, the Sami people have always had its own religion. It is based in the relationship of the people with the nature, such as the American indigenous gods. The Sami religion has been traditionally based in the cult of images and gods/goddesses, animal ceremonies and shamans. Each of their gods had different functions and helped them for everyday lives. The animal ceremonies included, for example, rites when bear was killed by bear hunters. However, a lot of this tradition has been forgotten over the centuries due to the obligation of conversion to the Christianism, in many times with punishments and death penalties.
