Reindeers are a central point of the live of the Sami people. Only Samis who are members of a sameby are allowed to practise their husbandry.

Their importance comes from the perfect adaptation of the animal to the Arctic climate with long and cold winters.

The full cover of hair provides the reindeer a perfect insulation. Their big weight, around 100-150 kg for males and 60-90 kg for females is also important for the survival of the animal and the Sami.

Another important feature of the reindeer is their group behaviours, moving always together in groups from a several to hundreds.

A fact that differences reindeers from other type of deer is that females together with males have antlers.
