In 1986 there were 2 events that marked the development of the Sami people in the last years. The first one was the explosion of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl. Even been so far away it had a great effect over the Sami people, since the nuclear waste fall over their lands and affecting thousands of reindeer. This had a major effect since, from them, a lot of people had fear of eating reindeer meat. However, not everything was bad for the Sami people in this year, since the Sami flag was approved in the Nordic Sami Conference in Are, Sweden. But despite the increasing concern about the Sami rights, there have been many conflicts, such as with the forest companies. Sami in places lost their places for reindeer herding in many places. But by luck, in the last years there have been an increase in the Sami recognition. In 1993 the Sami parliament was opened in Sweden and the UN took this year as the one of indigenous people. Moreover the free game hunting was legalized for the Sami people in the Swedish mountains. And many investigations and researches have been doing about this people.
