Top 5 Activities in Crimea
Crimea - the pearl of the Black Sea
I was born in the small seaside town on the peninsul called Crimea (Крым, Krym) with a long history and an incredibly diverse culture and nature. Despite the fact that I have not lived there for a long time already, I try to come home as often as possible and in this post I would like to share those activities that I did on my last trip and which, in my opinion, will help any tourist to explore the diversity of the Crimea.
1. Festival "Genoese Helmet" ("Генуэзский шлем")
Every summer in Sudak in the Old Genoese fortress there is a knight festival, one of the most famous historical festivals in Eastern Europe, where more than 300 reconstruction clubs gather for a grandiose celebration. This summer I participated in the festival as a historian with the reconstruction of the Scandinavian costume for the third time. Visitors of the festival attend theatrical performances, hube knight battles - buhurt, can participate in archery and listen to the medieval music.
2. Sea, sea, sea
What is the vacation without the sea? Crimea is surrounded almost from all sides by the warm Black Sea. All holidaymakers will be able to find a place to their taste with picturesque beaches and clear water. It is difficult to advise a certain place, since the Crimea is very diverse: the most famous resorts are on the southern coast, but there are usually more people and the prices are higher; in the west, you can relax more quietly and there are beautiful places with medicinal mud, but you will not see mountains and forests.
3. "Only mountains can be better than mountains, those that you have not yet visited. "
There are people who are used to long mountain hikes and cannot live without them, but there are those for whom even the shortest and easiest way in the mountain is a real struggle. But both of them, will be able to find in the Crimea what they like. Slow hikes on the comfortable trails along the sea shore, through picturesque rocks and grottoes to the Tsarsky beach with most clean water, are for the not so sports tourists. And long trips to the Crimean mountains, the highest point of which is at an altitude of 1545 m for those who are more experienced.
4. Cultural places
The region of Crimea isreally rich of the historical and cultural places. The first people appeared on this land about one hundred thousand years ago, the Crimea entered the territory of the Bosporan kingdom, the Roman, Ottoman and Russian empires and all this left traces here in the form of numerous monuments such as the ancient city of Chersonese, founded by the Greeks, Chufut-Kale - a medieval Jewish mountain fortress and so on. Lovers of architecture will find interesting the royal villas located on the south coast. For example, in one of them, in the Livadia Palace from 4 to 11 February 1945 during II World War, took place the Yalta Conference of the leaders of the three governments the USSR, the USA and Great Britain.
5. In vino veritas
Due to the warm climate grapes in Crimea grows almost in every house and each family has its own recipe for home-made wine. I remember how, as a child, my brother and I first accidentally got drunk at home with the tincture our grandmother made of grapes, which grew in our garden. Therefore, to come to the Crimea and not taste local wine - it's just a sin. The most famous producers are "Massandra", "Koktebel", "Sun Valley", "Inkerman" and I would suggest to take a trip to the winery "Novyi Svit", where visiting the ancient cellars storing the secret of the birth of classical champagne, modern wine production and tasting of exclusive collection kinds of champagne will give you an unforgettable experience.
P. S. In Crimea there are many more exciting things that cannot be told in one post and visited for one trip, but I hope that the activities that I mentioned will interest you and make you visit my homeland.
