Experience in Udine, Italy by Valentina
What is it like to live in Udine? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city of Udine, is a really tiny city in the North East of Italy. To describe it, is better to use the sentence "You cry when you arrive, and you cry when you leave it". If for someone size represents the main limit, I can say that for an Erasmus point of view is the best part. You will soon feeling home, knowing local people and getting around with the bike.
What is the student lifestyle like in Udine?
Student life is not as crazy as in big cities one, but the "aperitivo time" it will become the best part of your day. There are only few discos just outside the center, but the main party is in the little bars spread all around. In Friuli we love enjoying wine with friends, especially during the "Friuli DOC", the wine festival in September. It is the best way to start an amazing Erasmus!
How much does it cost to live in Udine?
Udine is quite cheap compared to other northern towns. Accommodation ranges from 160 (shared room) till 300 euros. Drinking is quite cheap (a glass of wine is 1 euro, beer is more expensive 2. 50 the small one). Food has an average price but there are discounts for students
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Udine? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it's not difficult. There are many websites as well as ad. on the university's wall. The best way it is to arrive in town and look directly for a place instead of renting it from home. University offers a services for room hunting, but the offer is limited, it s better to go to University and find the different advertisement, or to look in website like SUBITO, EASYSTANZA, BAKEKA.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Well italian food its always good! Regional food includes frico (a dish of melted cheese) and all sorts of salami etc.
What places would you recommend visiting in Udine?
As i said the city is quite small. The castle is the main attraction, but around Udine there are a lot of places to visit like Aquileia, Tarvisio (for skying and iceskating) and it's really close to Slovenian and Austrian borders. The seaside is only 1 hour away.
Is it good to eat out in Udine? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are a lot of good restaurant in Udine, with different ranges. One place were you must go is Napolitano, it's a pizzeria close to the main square. The actual name is not Napolitano (I don't remember the real name) but it's the pizzeria close to Gelateria Luna.
Is the nightlife good in Udine? Where is good to go?
The nightlife starts at 6 with aperitivo and keep all night long. The best places for aperitivo are: Pieri Mortadele (the most famous one), La Cantinetta, La Polse, Retrogusto. During the night Q-b, Tre-jolie (where most the Erasmus go) the Black Stuff (irish pub) and to end the night the place that serves the best cocktails called Taverna dell'angelo.
