Experience in Torun, Poland by Hania
What is it like to live in Torun? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Toruń is one of the most beautiful cities in Poland. A large part of people living here are students, which create an incredible and fantastic atmosphere. It's not a big city; therefore, you can walk home at night, no matter in which part of the city you live. I really recommend Toruń to everyone - it's a perfect city to live and study.
What is the student lifestyle like in Torun?
Besides having one of the best universities in Poland, there are lots of places to party. You can visit pubs (majority of them are located in the medieval city center) or have a party at home. Polish students enjoy both ways of meeting with friends. There are lots of concerts (I mean, various types of music, including jazz and classic music).
How much does it cost to live in Torun?
Life in Toruń is much cheaper than in Warsaw or Cracow. You can easily find a single room with total price under 500 zł. If you know where to go, you can have a dinner for less than 10 zł.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Torun? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult to find accommodation, but some of the owners, especially older ones, do not speak English. For Erasmus students there are available rooms in the dormitory of the NCU. But beware - as I heard, they sometimes party hard. You can find ads about rooms on the Internet, e. g. on the site anonse.pl.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Students don't eat traditional Polish dishes every day because they do not have much time or skills. But Polish mothers and grannies often give them lots of jars with food for a month, so be sure you will check them out if you ask anyone.
What places would you recommend visiting in Torun?
The Old City, for sure. Copernicus House (actually he was born in another house, next to the Market Square, but who cares... ), Museum of Piernik, Planetary, Philadelfia Boulevard and lots of other places. Students will show you another places for sure.
Is it good to eat out in Torun? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are famous pierniki - gingerbread cookies - I prefer the ones with black currant and white chocolate. Next to the university, and also in the city center, there are Manekin restaurants which offer various kind of pancakes and they're not expensive. There are also various restaurants, but you should ask someone where you can eat and not pay much.
Is the nightlife good in Torun? Where is good to go?
At the Old City you can find everything you need to have a good time at night.
What advice would you give future students heading to Torun?
Beware of traffic giants next to the Piłsudski Bridge, especially on Friday afternoons. You can spend there a lot of time.
