Experience in Toledo, Spain. By Eva

What is it like to live in Toledo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I do not currently live in Toledo, but I visit the city every day for work, study and going out with friends. It’s a really lovely city with many different areas. It has neighbourhoods that are calmer, and neighbourhoods that are more animated, so you can choose where to live depending on what suits you.

If you come to Toledo and find yourself in the historical centre you have to be prepared to walk up a lot of hills, but it is always worth it. I recommend living in Toledo, and coming here for an Erasmus. To me it is a city, albeit small, that leaves you with so many beautiful things to see.

What is the student lifestyle like in Toledo?

There are two university campuses in Toledo. One is in the historical centre. There they study virtually all social science and literature degrees. All the university residences are also in the centre, making the atmosphere in this part of the city really good and the people all have great attitudes and ways of being. Here you will also find all the clubs of Toledo.

The other campus is along the river, in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood. Here there are often lots of student flats and, in this zone there are lots of bars to drink beer in any day of the week, and key place for going out and meeting new people.

How much does it cost to live in Toledo?

I do not live here, but a flat would cost between €200 - €300 approximately, depending on where you look. I think residencies oscillate around €400 a month.

Was it difficult finding accommodation in Toledo? Is there any advice you would give?

As mentioned before, I do not live in Toledo, but I do have friends that do. One of my best friends lived in a residence for two years and was very content. It included food and you get to meet a lot of people.

Later, she moved to a flat closer to the university and found one that had been refurbished and was comfortable with various rooms. Sharing a flat is the best. I don’t know exactly how much it costs, but the essential thing is to look for one in the historical centre or in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood, because these are the places closest to both campuses.

What is the food like in the country? What are your favourite dishes?

The food in Spain is the best. In Toledo, you can find a range of restaurants from the typical ones found in every country – such as Mcdonalds etc. – to local restaurants with typical Spanish food and menus of the day that are reasonably well-priced.

What places would you recommend visiting in Toledo?

The historical centre is one of the main places to visit. There you can see the cobbled streets, the cathedral, the palace and various museums. The riverbank has different paths and they are really lovely, and perfect for a stroll and to pass the time when the weather permits.

Another interesting area in the Valle. Here is the best spot in Toledo for taking photos, and one day they even had a religious pilgrimage.

Furthermore, you can also pass by the Paseo de la Vega, or visit other places in Toledo that have interesting things to see and do.

And eating in Toledo? Can you name some of your favourite places?

There are various restaurants in Toledo, but what I always enjoy most is eating Tapas. For that there is Trebol, 100 Montaditos etc.

There is also Nuevo Almacén.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Toledo?

If you plan to go out for tapas and beers, the best place to go would be Santa Teresa. There you will find many bars all together, so you could go from one to another without walking miles and miles.

If your plan is to go out for the night partying, the best place is Casco. There you will find various clubs and pubs, such as La Nuit, Explorer, Camelot etc.

What advice would you give future students heading to Toledo?

My advice would be to look for somewhere near to your university to live. Personally, I prefer Santa Teresa if you’re looking for a flat with people and you want to be in the best place for going out every day.

As soon as there is good weather, head to the Valle and pass by the river.
