Experience in Tijuana, Mexico by Melissa
How much does it cost to live in Tijuana?
It's not really expensive, a room in an apartment it's between 1000 and 3000 pesos, given that 1 euro is the same as 23 pesos. Therefore, you can find a good place and near the university from 44 to 130 euros.
The food at the university goes from 20 to 50 pesos, depending on what you want, however I rarely eat from there. I prefer to eat a whole pizza in one of the restaurants across the street for 80-90 pesos, most of the students divided it or take it to eat it in their house.
A bus ticket is 5 pesos if you show your students ID, otherwise you must pay 10 pesos, in Tijuana there's no bus fare card payment system, so you have to pay each time you take one, no matter what route. On the other hand, the collective taxi is about 13 pesos, they are big and brown or green colored.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tijuana? Is there any advice you can give?
Not really, there are a lot of apartments near the university and some students are willing to share a room of their house or know someone looking for a roommate.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
There are all kind of foods you can imagine in Tijuana: chinese, japanese, hindi and of course the mexican food are some examples. But what distingues the Baja region is it's baja-med gastronomy which combines ingredientes and dishes from different parts of Baja California.
If you are vegetarian there are a lot of options too. My favorite food are the veggie burgers selled at Foodgarden in 'Plaza Río' and the italian food at the restaurant in front of the university, I would say it's one of the best italian restaurants in the city, the owner happens to be from Italy.
What places would you recommend visiting in Tijuana?
Cecut, it's a cultural place, they have the biggest theater in town, a museum which on Sundays it's free. A spherical cinema where the movie is displayed all around you. They have another cinema, on Wednesday is 2x1, sometimes they have free movie day. There's always something to watch, a free concert on the weekend or an exposition.
Playas de Tijuana, it's the beach and it's like 15 minutes from the university by car, the water is cold but you can always walk on the sand, it's really pretty and you can sit there or outside one of the many cafe areas, in the walker.
Is it good to eat out in Tijuana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Foodgarden, is one of the best places to eat because it's not like a typical restaurant, they have all this little shops in the same place, you can go to the one you like, order, receive your number and the ticket. It is paid at the bar/cashier and order your drink there, they have different flavours, my favorite is lemonade with cucumber and mint.
If you have time between classes, you can cross the street and go to the restaurants in front of the university: Gianluca, the best italian restaurant. Applebee's, Little Caesars (pizza shop), kasa-cafe: a local restaurant, they have salads, subs, and more things, a lot of students go there to eat when they have free periods. There's also mexican food and an ice-cream shop.
Is the nightlife good in Tijuana? Where is good to go?
Yes, I don't go out but my friends do and everyone knows where the clubs and pubs are.
They all are near one another, a lot are in a place call: la sexta, it's actually the name of the street, in the center of Tijuana.
