Erasmus Experience in Tétouan, Morocco by Hajar
What is it like to live in Tétouan? Do you recommend it? What is the town like?
Tétouan is a pretty town which is situated north of Morocco, encircled by the mountains and the Mediterranean sea. Thanks to its history, landscapes and beaches, it is a very touristy town.

What is the student life like in Tétouan?
In Tétouan there are three faculties: the sciences, the arts and the 'polidesciplinaires' - economics and law. These are all part of the University Abd El Malek Saadi, as well as the national school of applied sciences ENSA.

What is the cost of living like in Tétouan?
It is average, perhaps cheaper than other towns such as Tanger, Rabar and Casablanca.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tétouan? Do you have any advice?
No, it is not very difficult to find accommodation in Tétouan if you have enough money, otherwise it is difficult to find suitable accommodation if you don't have much money. For example, for students who have not been able to get to the University city beforehand and want accommodation close by to the University, it is not easy, as there are a limited number of residences and the prices are high. Nonetheless, it is less expensive than many other towns in Morocco, especially the major cities such as Rabat.
What is the food like in the city? What are your favourite meals?
Moroccan cuisine is one of the most delicious in the world. The cuisine in Tétouan is a little more special as it encompasses aspects from both Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. My favourite dishes are meat tajine, fish tajine and fried Tétouanese sardines. For fast food the sandwiches are worth noting, they are very food and often cheap.

What places are worth seeing in Tétouan?
The old medina of Tétouan, the beaches and the little touristy towns nearby (Oued Laou, Amsa, Martil, Mdiq, Fnideq... ) or another one of the holiday villages (Marina Smir, Cabila... ). Hikes in the Ghoghizes mountains are also worth doing.

What about eating out in Tétouan? Can you tell us your favourite places?
The snacks which are available all over Tétouan, both in town centre and elsewhere. The price of a sandwich is almost the same (7 DH for a simple sandwich, and between 12 DH and 15 DH for one with chicken or minced beef). My favourite restaurant is Safae, right next to the faculty of sciences. There is also a traditional Tétouanese juice which is called 'Zaazaa' - my favourite places to get it is at Mozaazat Alhabib in the Touta district next to Santa de Rmel. To add, one of my favourite dishes is Falafel, at Nour Sham on avenue 10 Mai in the city centre.
