Experience in Tbilisi, Georgia by Lekha
What is it like to live in Tbilisi? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's quite nice to live in Tbilisi. I study here, and it is very student friendly. Tbilisi is a rapidly developing city, offering something new every few months. The city is pretty small but there's always a few places undiscovered.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tbilisi?
The accommodation is pretty great if you have friends to share an apartment with all within a 1-3km radius from the university. There's no need to feel out of place because of the number of foreign students studying in Tbilisi. You will definitely find almost any kind of ethnic group studying here!
How much does it cost to live in Tbilisi?
Well including rent, utility bills and groceries plus a few parties and shopping indulgences here and there I would say anywhere between 320 to 450€.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tbilisi? Is there any advice you can give?
Nope. Not at all. Flats are very easy to find in Tbilisi. Almost anyone in the university can help you out.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I am a fan of most georgian dishes. Top favorites would be:
- khinkhali (dumplings)
- adjaruli khatchapuri (cheese bread)
- pelmeni lobio (red kidney beans and bread)
- mtsvadi (barbecue)
- and most definitely the kubdari! (meat bread)
What places would you recommend visiting in Tbilisi?
I would recommend visiting Shardeni Street on a weekend. The Peace Bridge, Lisi Lake, Turtle Lake, Vake Park, the Mediathek library, Amirani Theatre, and all the food joints along Chauchavadze. Also Rustaveli for shopping!
Is it good to eat out in Tbilisi? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Of course! My favorite spots are:
- Podomossirio on chauchavadze
- Hemingway on Shardeni street (best sushi ever)
- Burger Bar on Abashidze
- #1 Steak House on Abashidze
- Luca Polare on Abashidze
Almost any georgian restaurant!
Is the nightlife good in Tbilisi? Where is good to go?
Saturday night is the best to experience nightlife in Tbilisi.
City club on Shardeni, Senate Club on Vake, Moscow Club, Urban Lounge, etc are some good places.
What advice would you give future students heading to Tbilisi?
TRAVEL! Make every use of the weekends and holidays to just pack a overnight backpack and get out of the city! Explore georgia's soviet beauty, the mindblowing landscape. go parasailing, hiking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter!
