Erasmus Experience in Strasbourg, France by Dominika
Why did you choose to go to Strasbourg, France?
I have been to Strasbourg three times before and I really liked the atmosphere of the city. So I decided to do Erasmus here.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I got from Erasmus 450 euros per month. But French government also helps with your rent by CAF (Caisse d'allocations familiales). I got from them 90euros per month. The contribution depends on the amount of rent.
What is the student lifestyle like in Strasbourg?
There are many events organised by school or by ESN. When the weather is good there are many picnics or sport activities organised by students.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Strasbourg to other students?
Definitely yes! If you are looking for something smaller (Strasbourg is really small city but full of great atmosphere, nice parcs).
I am studying at EM Strasbourg Business School so I don´t really know how it works at UNISTRA.
What is the food like?
Food is great. THE typical local food is called "Tarte flambée" that I really recommend to try.
There are three menzas (uni restaurants). The best one is at Gallia.
Food is for 3, 30 euros (entrée, main food and desert).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Strasbourg?
I am staying in the Cité universitare Paul Appell (dorm).
How much does it cost to live in Strasbourg?
It depends on more factors, like if you buy transport card or you just rent a bike, what type of accomodation you have etc...
About transport - you can rent bike in Vélhop only for 25euros/3 months. You don´t really need to buy transport card if you have a bike. Strasbourg is really small and you can move everywhere by bike.
Together around 550-600 euros/month including parties, trips, accomodation and food.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I speak French so I didn´t have any problem with language. But I know that my friends that don´t speak French had from time to time some problems with communication... but I helped them with some administration stuff.
At EM, it´s obligatory to take some courses in French.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Strasbourg from your city?
From Bratislava - Slovakia, it was definitely bus (if you buy it 45days before departure it's just 35 euros/one way). Of course during Christmas its more expensive (60-75 euros).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Strasbourg?
Bars:
- Mémé dans les Orties,
