Women in Nordic Politics

Women's representation in politics is a major issue. The Nordic countries are among the first countries to have granted definitely the right of women to vote and to run for office. In 1906, Finnish women became the first in the world to have unrestricted rights both to vote and to stand for parliament.

in Sweden, the demand for universal and equal suffrage had been a major political issue during the final decades of the 19th century. On 24 May 1919, the Riksdag (the name of the Swedish Parliament) approved universal and equal suffrage for women and men.

After the adoption of voting rights for women, the face of the Nordic Parliaments has changed.

In his book Scandinavian politics today, David Arter points out that “the Nordic Parliaments have some of the highest levels of female representation in the World. ”

We understand better why the countries of northern Europe are often held up as an example for this subject.
