The Swedish Heroines: Pippi and Lisbeth

The Swedish literature has always given a very special place to women. From Pippi Langstrump to Lisbeth Salander, all of them are heroines for being different from the other women of their time. Both are brave, represent the values ??of feminism and figth for getting equality and justice.

When Steig Larsson created the character of Lisbeth, he imagined how Pippi would be in the contemporary Swedish society. He also used the novels of Astrid Lindgren to create another character, Mikael Blomkvist. He is based on one of Lindgren´s most famous characters, the young detective Kalle Blomkvist, who even shares the name with the protagonist of Millennium.

In addition to a common origin and the shared values, Lisbeth and Pippi also share a home. That is, the protagonist of Millennium lives in the same residence where Astrid Lindgren spent most of her life: Fiskargatan, 9 in Stockholm. The building was built in 1910 and is located in one of the more exclusive and discreet neighbourhood of the city. From this place the views of the island of Djurgården and Saltsjön Bay are spectacular.

If you want to get there, get off at Slussen subway station and go to the well-known “viewpoint of the thermometer.; Once there, keep walking till Mosebacke square and cross it until you find the beginning of Fiskargatan Street, on the far right. If you follow this street till the end, the building will appear in front of you.

To make sure that you are in the right place, pay attention to the main door and look for a sign which says;V. Kulla;, referring to the historic house where Pippi's character lives her adventures (Villa Villekulla).
