Experience in Skövde, Sweden by Arantxa
What is it like to live in Skövde? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I think that Skövde is the best place to live as an Erasmus. Not because of the city (too small, no interesting places to visit, very expensive), but because of the relation between the Erasmus students. The international committee of the University of Skövde makes really nice work to make feel people like home.
All the students live in students accommodations (there are 3 or 4) and it is usual to make dinners and parties together in the student accommodations (as going to a restaurant is too expensive).
The landscape of Skövde is really nice, you can be really close to nature. There are some lakes in the city, and also a mountain with 2 lakes, where a lot of activities can be done (ski, fishing... ).
About the weather... it is really cold, a lot of snow (about 4 months with snow all days), so you expend much time at home with your friends.
What is the student lifestyle like in Skövde?
I was in Skövde studying a master... it depends on how are you used to work, but I had a lot of free time.
How much does it cost to live in Skövde?
The student's accommodations are around 300-400 €/room/month.
Food is really expensive (and bad).
Forget about going out to have dinner.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Skövde? Is there any advice you can give?
It is almost impossible to find a flat, as there are like waiting list in Sweden to rent a flat.
But you will always have a place in one of the 4th student accommodation (the university helps with this).
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
Food... the only good food in Sweden is the sweets.
What places would you recommend visiting in Skövde?
Billingen, billingehod (or something like this).
Is it good to eat out in Skövde? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
You can go skiing in Billingen (the mountain). It is very nice to do nordic ski, not that much to do downhill ski, as there is one small slope.
You can always run.
Is the nightlife good in Skövde? Where is good to go?
There is not too much nightlife, but Erasmus people usually go to the same places (every day of the week one different place).
The university has like a disco, called Boulogne, where the drinks are cheaper than in the normal discos.
In the city center, there is a street with all the discos, like Gladje, Husaren, Bougrens.
If you don't want to expend all the money, avoid drinking inside the discos.
In Sweden, alcoholic drinks are only sold in special supermarkets regulated by the government. They have a special schedule and the prices are really expensive (but always less than in discos).
What advice would you give future students heading to Skövde?
Bring a warm coat and mix with people from other countries and cultures.
