Erasmus Experience in São Paulo, Brazil by Daniel
Why did you choose to go to São Paulo, Brazil?
To learn another language and because Brazil is the main country in Latin America.
How long does the scholarship last? How much financial help do you get?
6 months and I get €3, 000 from Santander Bank.
What is the student scene like in São Paulo?
Away from the Campus conspicuous by its absence. You have to look for it well it's too big and the people don't have much time for a social life.
Would you recommend the city and the São Paulo University to other students?
I would recommend it as an experience of course, and above all as we say it like this "The best thing about São Paulo is going out at the weekend". It's fantastically well connected with the rest of Latin America.
How is the country's food?
It's good, but a little repetitive after a while... the "salgados" are the popular dish because they are excellent!
Did it cost you to find accommodation in São Paulo?
Yes looooads. But come on, now it would cost me less. It ends up that this country revolves around Facebook, forget about websites for looking for flats like in Europe, and search directly on Facebook groups, for that and for everything.
How much does living in São Paulo cost?
It's more expensive than Madrid where I study. You should pick a flat in a safe and well connected area, not all of them are like that not even close. I pay 1, 100 Brazilian reales, that's a little more than €300, but you can also find things for less.
What is the language like? Did you go to some course at the University?
Be careful! Portuguese is not so easy as they paint it in Spain nor much less, especially speaking and writing, but well the Uni offers a course that is very good and very intense in three weeks.
What is the most economic or fastest way of getting to São Paulo from your city?
Economic? None. I searched on various companies and ended up coming with Lufthansa on a flight from Madrid-Frankfort-São Paulo and returned from New York for not much more than €600.
What places would you recommend for going out partying in São Paulo?
Vila Madalena, but without a shadow of a doubt... and the University "cervejadas".
And eating in São Paulo? Can you mention your favourite places?
Pffffffffffffffffffff, well to be honest no, but you can eat great here... it depends what you like, I haven't even went back to any because they are too much. "Peixaria bar and Venda" is good for example and if you feel like something Spanish because you feel "saudade" go to "Bar Sancho" on Agusta Street.
And how does it visit culturally?
São Paulo has one of the most complete night lives and cultural equipment of Latin America. As advice, look for the days that are free, things like a museum for example is on Tuesdays, another is on Wednesdays and so on but be prepared for endless queues.
Some advice you want to give future students in São Paulo?
