What is it like to live in Santiago? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Santiago is an amazing city for young people, it has a plenty of places to visit: from cultural/historical sightseeings to nightlife, Santiago has it all. I totally recommend visiting the city, however you must be guided by a "santiaguino", as it will make for a different experience and you will see the best parts of the city. In Santiago there are many things to do and see!

What is the student lifestyle like in Santiago?

Personally, I have to say that it's a great place for students. If you don't have much money, you can still have a nice experience here, because you can find many cheaper options (food, partying, transport, etc). Also, Chile is a geographically narrow country, so if you get tired of city life, you can be at the beach in around an hour and a half. Or, if you prefer activities like running, walking or hiking, you can visit different parks (Quinta Normal or Bicentenario, for example) and places like Cerro Santa Lucía or Cerro San Cristobal, both located in the heart of the city.

How much does it cost to live in Santiago?

The cost of living in Santiago depends on where you are staying. Prices rise on the north-east side of the city. Renting an apartment in the central zone costs around 250. 000-300. 000 CLP per month, and a lunch, for example, may cost around 3000 CLP.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Santiago? Is there any advice you can give?

It's not very difficult, but it depends on what you expect to pay and the location you desire. I recommend that you rent a place close to any metro station, because it better facilitates movement around the city.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

In Santiago, you can find a wide variety of food. If you are looking for something local, almost all dishes have meat, so if you're vegan or vegetarian, it's advisable to look for something different. You will see a lot of street food around the city, that you should try, of course, like sopaipillas, completos, anticuchos, etc. There's also a lot of Peruvian food in the city, which is delicious.

What places would you recommend visiting in Santiago?

In my opinion, you should visit Barrio Italia - it's a nice place where you can find many kinds of food, clothing, bars, nightclubs, etc. in a tranquil residential zone. Cerro Santa Lucía is a wonderful place, full of history, right in the centre of the city. If you want to experience nightlife as a local, you must visit Bellavista, a great place to party all night long and eat great food.

Is it good to eat out in Santiago? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Santiago has many gastronomical options, so you can easily find Peruvian, Indian, Italian, Colombian, Thai, and Chinese cuisine, to name a few. If you want to try traditional Chilean food, you must visit Mercado Central or Mercado Tirso de Molina, both of which are located within a block of each other. My favorite place for breakfast is Café de La Candelaria, located in Barrio Italia.

Is the nightlife good in Santiago? Where is good to go?

The nightlife in Santiago is great. You must visit Bellavista, where you can have a drink (or many) and find great food too. The locals are very friendly, so if you meet people in the city, do not hesitate to get to know them.

What advice would you give future students heading to Santiago?

Try to find an apartment close to any metro station. Also, try to rent a place with other students so you can both save money and meet new people. There are many places to visit in the city, so try to visit as many as you can! Don't be afraid to meet people, as making friends will make your experience in Santiago much more exciting.

If you come to Santiago, you won't regret it!
