Experience in Sanaa, Yemen by Ahmed
What is it like to live in Sanaa? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
As a Yemeni, I liked living there, it's cheap and pretty nice for Yemenis. I don't recommend living there at least for the time being because of the political instability in the region.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sanaa?
I can't say much about that cause there isn't really any difference between students and other people living in Sana’a, so student lifestyle is normal people's lifestyle with the added pressure of studying.
How much does it cost to live in Sanaa?
The economy has been unstable for the past 3 years, so I can't really say, but it's cheap in general, you can live happily with 300$ as far as I know.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sanaa? Is there any advice you can give?
It is, most people own their homes, renting culture hasn't really spread out that much but it has started to couple of years ago. But if you are a student you can live in the uni's dormitory.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is very delicious and there are various dishes you can choose from. I would say Saltah or Fahsah is my favourite dish.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sanaa?
Old Sana'a of course, Wadi Dhahr, Bani Matar.
Is it good to eat out in Sanaa? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is, for fish you can go to the Belaili market to get fresh and tasty sea fish. Al-qa'a has the best Saltah restaurants I've ever experienced.
Is the nightlife good in Sanaa? Where is good to go?
Yemen is a Muslim country and pretty conservative, especially the capital Sana’a so nightlife isn't popular, people can have nice parties but inside their homes or closed spaces.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sanaa?
Don't do it, at least until the situation settles down.
