City and Society

Home is normally a place, where You feel comfortable, calm and secluded, it can also be deducted that most of the time people create their own place; world; universe and call it "home", the analogue of this word could be a "paradise corner". Nevertheless, "paradise corners" are normally formed during our childhood. What would we associate with home? It could be You parents, seeblings, food, toys, even Your couch could be a great example. Sorry for such a long lyrical digression, but I want You to understand my point and I want my Reader to live through everything what I felt and experienced. We will leave the last definition of "home" for  dessert.

When I first arrived to Saint Petersburg it was nothing special, my mood wasn't one of the best, but still I had some energy for a short walk around the campus. Campus was surrounded by woods and the walk wasn't special. When I actually came to the center of the city, the first thing, which I felt is a smell. You might understand me wrong, but I smelled history, literally. I have never been to such a place, where two time periods merge. I remembered Albert Einstein's quote "The main reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once", it felt like two different places and two different times met at the same point. "This city remembers everything"- I said to myself and my eyes filled with tears...

Normally a great city blows your mind, Saint Petersburg stole my heart... After living several years in a city of "history" I actually got used to it and all the magic of the city disapeared, but not for long. After I left the city to study in Bologna, Italy I felt like the part of my heart was taken: it was not taken by anybody, it was taken by the  city.

What is home? Home is the place, where Your heart is...
