Experience in Saint Paul, United States by Aparna
What is it like to live in Saint Paul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's a great place to live! It's pretty safe and there are lots of cute quirky cafes around to chill in. Downtown St. Paul is more of a commercial place so it gets pretty empty after business hours. I live on grand avenue and think it's a great place to hang out! There are a lot of colleges and universities in the area so you see a lot of students in the area.
What is the student lifestyle like in Saint Paul?
Student life is pretty great! There are lots of interesting festivals that happen during the summer which are free and that one can attend. I wouldn't say it's as much of a party lifestyle as compared to Minneapolis but there are plenty of bars that students go to around St Paul during the weekend. The restaurants are not that expensive and pretty affordable.
How much does it cost to live in Saint Paul?
It depends on your living arrangement and can cost from 370$ - 900$ depending on how you choose to live. If you live with someone in an average two bedroom apartment, it could cost from 450 - 600$ per month. If you live in a house with a lot of people, the cost comes down quite a bit and can be from 350 - 600$ depending on the house. You might also not have utilities (heat, water, electricity) included so watch out for that.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Saint Paul? Is there any advice you can give?
Not really. Just look it up on craigslist or look up some realtors.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is pretty diverse! I think it's pretty great. There's a Mediterranean restaurant called Shish on grand avenue and it's my favorite place to go to because it has good food and is moderately priced!
What places would you recommend visiting in Saint Paul?
I would say visit Minnehaha falls, Como zoo, the Capitol and the Mississippi River. Take a walk down different neighborhoods like grand avenue and western avenue.
Is it good to eat out in Saint Paul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Definitely go to Shish and Nina's cafe!
Is the nightlife good in Saint Paul? Where is good to go?
There are quite a few happening bars around but I personally prefer to go to Minneapolis for a night out. The two cities are so inter connected that it's easy to go from one to the other using the bus or light rail.
What advice would you give future students heading to Saint Paul?
Be prepared for the winter! The city is stunning during the summer but the winters are long and cold. Take enough warm clothing with you! :)
