Saarschleife, the loop of the Saar river
If you are leaving in Saarbrucken and you maybe got bored or tired of the city then you have to put on your trekking shoes and head to Saarschleife, the place where the Saar river makes a very big loop offering an awesome view.
How to get to The Saarschleife
To arrive there from Saarbrucken is very easy. The train station that you have to travel to is called Mettlach and there are trains almost every 30 minutes from the Saarbrucken Hauptbahnhof. Also, the trip will take around 40 minutes, is not so much and if you are travelling with friends you would not even notice how the time will fly by.
In Mettlach there are a lot of trekking and biking signes that can guide and help you to find the trekking paths. Yes, if you are a biking fan this is also the place for you because of the biking routes.
Getting around the place
For going to Saarschleife you have to find the sign on which is written Cloef Atrium or the chef's hat symbol and follow it. I was trekking in the area two times and because the trekking route is actually a circuit I have two diffrent experiences.
The first time I was walking down by the river for maybe one hour and after I entered a path to the right and climbed up until the Saar's beautiful view and then go back through the high forest. The second time I did the opposite, so I climbed all of the forest by following the chef's hat until I reached the Saarschleife and then I returned down by the river. I recommend both ways, but for me the second one was the best.
Now, why you should go there? What is to see?
The forest. A very beautiful forest. It was so green and fresh when I went there. So refreshing. If you are not impressed only by the forest then you should keep climbing until the view point of the Saar's loop. Here, for sure, you will feel something.
You can see from high up how the river is curving creating this big weird but beautiful loop. The surounded hills are included in the view too contributing to the greatness of the view.
Take photos here. Lots of photos, but not until you admire everything for a couple of minutes. So, first admire, breath and then take photos.
If you wanna go even higher
Baumwipfelpfad or TreeTop Path is a very big and high construction that you can climb if you wanna see the landscape from a higher point of view and be taller then the trees.
For me, the view from the ground was enough, but you can decide there what's suits you the most.
I forgot to mention...you can also see animals
Somewhere near the Cloef there is also a place where you can see ostrichs, very big strange birds. If you find a sign with a bird on it, just follow and you will get there.
