What is it like to live in Richmond? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Richmond is an incredible niche to live in, something very unexpected just by thinking of the Southern city. It hosts a vibrant music scene, gastronomical hidden gems, and an incredible mix of city and the scenery along the James River. There's always something to do in Richmond, whether you are a "city person" or "nature lover"... or both. If you enjoy attending concerts, Richmond attracts not only big touring artists but an incredibly interwoven local indie music scene. As a former intern at a Richmond record label, I can stay without a doubt that the music scene in Richmond is like no other. Living in Richmond brings the adventures and diversity of a large city while maintaining the connections and community of a small town. You will never run out of things to do, and you will never feel overwhelmed while doing it.

What is the student lifestyle like in Richmond?

Richmond is also the home of several impressive universities, each with their own niche within the Richmond cultural scene. Whether it is the more suburban University of Richmond or city-center VCU, each school allows for its students to explore exactly what it's like being a student there. As a student at the University of Richmond myself, I have had the opportunity to experience the diverse food, musical culture, and fun nightlife scene the city has to offer. Only 10 minutes from campus is Cary Town, a row of restaurants and shops on Cary Street that are great to explore. 10 more minutes and I can reach the James River, a place where many students come to hike, swim, and hang out with friends. The River is surrounded by lush forests, giving the impression not of a metropolis, but of a wooded Virginia. If students want to go out on the town, they can adventure into the city itself and explore the many amazing bars and clubs scattered all throughout the neighborhoods. There is never a lack of entertainment as a student in Richmond.

How much does it cost to live in Richmond?

Richmond is a very affordable place to live in, as opposed to other cities. The prices of gas, food, and clothing are all incredibly cheap. Housing is also a great steal- I am living off campus next year and have found a great apartment for way less than what I expected to pay. In Richmond, you have access to a great city lifestyle without creating a hole in your wallet- the best of both worlds.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Richmond? Is there any advice you can give?

Richmond, while a growing city, still has plenty of opportunities for living. Gentrification of many neighborhoods has risen prices, but has created beautiful neighborhoods which still have openings for residents. Some advice I would give is, if you can, visit the area around your neighborhood as well. See what local coffee shops, stores, and libraries are nearby. Discover the hidden gems of the neighborhood, as more likely than not, you'll be making them your go-to spots.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food in Richmond can be best described with one word- "diverse." From incredible Mexican restaurants with great happy hour deals, to the mouth-watering sushi and steak of Osaka, to the unique creative Thai food of Sabai, Richmond has it all. Whatever type of food you want, whenever you want, and in every part of the city. It hosts chains such as Cava, Chopt, and Chipotle, but the best food in the city are the hidden restaurants favored by locals. For instance, try the Greek on Cary restaurant, located in Cary Town, for some of the best authentic Greek food I've ever had!

What places would you recommend visiting in Richmond?

When visiting Richmond, definitely adventure to Belle Isle, a beautiful park on the James River that features hiking trails and splendrous river views. Make sure to visit Cary Town, a great row of shops and restaurants- perfect for a date night. See a show at the Broadberry, a local theater that hosts great acts and great food! If seeking a fancier night, check out the Jefferson Hotel, a prestigious hotel downtown where many great events are hosted. If you're into art and a classic evening out, enjoy the VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts), which has beautiful gardens as well! Whether in the suburbs or the city itself, Richmond has some great places for an amazing visit!

Is it good to eat out in Richmond? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is not only good to eat out in Richmond.... it is GREAT. My personal favorites are the Thai hotspot Sabai, Italian masterpiece Azzuro, sushi novelty Osaka, and local favorite the Daily Kitchen, which features incredible healthy and modern dishes. If you're looking for a local breakfast or brunch spot, Metro Diner is a Richmond classic. I could go on and on about even more restaurants, for Richmond is constantly showing me gastronomical wonders. I know that there are even more out there that I can't wait to try next!

Is the nightlife good in Richmond? Where is good to go?

The nightlife in Richmond is diverse as well, from cute bars featuring great happy hours, to clubs downtown that attract DJs from all over. I personally like going out to The Top, a club which is a great dancing spot for students in Richmond.

What advice would you give future students heading to Richmond?

Make sure to explore as much as possible and seek out all of what Richmond has to offer! I didn't start till later in my collegiate career, and I wish I had more time to see even more of the incredible city.
