The magical town of Rethymno
The summery smells, the cosy old town with narrow streets and hospitable small taverns... So many students and visitors fall in love with Rethymno and want to live there forever. So many people living in an alternative lifestyle, close to the nature, in a small but not oppressive society. It's easy to make friends and even easier to spend each of your day having a good time cause the people are always open and friendly. Not to mention the best food ever, with the most natural and fresh ingredients of the mother earth of Crete. Flea markets held every day, the sellers will also give you some extra veggies for free and treat you wine if you go when they finnish their shifts.
Every day you can hear sweet live music from some small tavern, local bands improvising and sending the listeners' mind to the God as the night goes on. A looooong beach to walk and breathe the sea breeze. Bicycle roads cross the whole city to make your life easier. Monuments from all the eras, from the palaeontologic, to the ancient, to the medieval, to the contemporary. Artists and exhibitions, cultural events going on for free. Music festivals of the Sound Technology school 3 times a year where everyone goes crazy! Oh, and the ecstatic days are during the carnival when everyone dresses up and go around and have amazing party time and parades!
Also, conferenses and summer schools organised by the University. Activities for all, dancing, yoga, theater, music, art, all affordable.
And when the summer comes after the short winter, grab the bus or a car with your gang of friends and tour to the southern part of the Camp. You can swim nude to some beaches, or no, you choose. There are So many bays. Canteens under the shadow of the trees are around with some live music often if you like. More crowded beaches with beach bars and activities if you also wish.
"Crete is the paradise on earth", and these are not my words...
This is my experience as a student living there for four and a half years. And i always loved to share these feelings with old and new friends who came to this town, with visitors from all over the world that we shared the same house for some days or months...! I could live there for longer but life has to moove on. Though, every time I return my skin shudders!
