Experience in Rabat, Morocco by Aida
What was it like living in Rabat? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It’s a small and very green city, I lived there for most of my life and I really loved it, and I still do love it considering it’s the city where I was born. It’s a peaceful city, there’s not a lot of traffic, nor are there many places to go out in the evening. That’s why it’s essential that you get to know everyone.
What is student life like in Rabat?
It’s very nice, especially in summer. It’s a small community - when you know one person, you’ll quickly get to know everyone.
What is the cost of living in Rabat?
Quite low. As a young girl it’s certainly easier, but in general the prices aren’t outrageous.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Rabat? Do you have any advice to give?
I lived with my parents so I have no idea!
What is the food like in the city? What are your favorite dishes?
It is nice, there are a few cool restaurants and of course Moroccan cuisine is one of the best in the world - you run the risk of falling in love with it.
What places would you recommend seeing in Rabat?
The Mausoleum of Mohammed V is quite majestic, there’s also the Chellah and finally a museum of modern art opened in the old town (medina).
And to eat in Rabat? Can you tell us your favorite places?
Finzi is a very affordable Italian restaurant. There are also more expensive places that are much nicer like Mai Thai or la Table du Reservoir (which has a direct connection to Le Reservoir, a pub with a live band – a guaranteed good night).
What places would you recommend for going out in Rabat?
Well, there’s the oldest and most well-known place: Amnesia. Otherwise, there’s Palatino which is more of a pub with karaoke on Monday evenings. Lastly, a new club has opened up: Le So (which is in fact a nightclub by Sofitel, I haven’t been able to try it yet but people have told me lots of things about it).
What advice do you want to give to future Erasmus students in Rabat?
You should get to know people as quickly as possible, as the city of Rabat is a little too quiet and you might get bored, but you can send me a message any time and I can give you some advice. The student community is small but you can integrate easily if there’s someone you know already. Plus, in May there's an amazing festival which is called Mawazine that you can’t miss!
However, if you have the chance to go to Morocco don’t limit yourself to Rabat - there are many hidden gems in my country.
