Experience in Quezon City, Philippines by RJ
What is it like to live in Quezon City? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Sound like a local and call it QC (Kyusi). If you're a student, then most likely you will be based in the areas near two of the top schools located there: University of the Philippines -Diliman (public) & its neighboring Ateneo de Manila University (private).
QC is a big city, but most of your needs will be 'strategically' located nearby your school (lodging, places to eat, laundry services, groceries, etc.). It is also a bit less congested than Manila, but traffic is still a perennial problem. Always carry an umbrella --- it will either be sunny, rainy, or sometimes both.
Filipinos are hospitable and always eager to lend a helping hand. You are sure to find someone who can speak English or at least point you to someone who can. Every person (almost) has a mobile phone and communicating this way is pretty cheap especially mobile providers have a lot of promos offering free texts, calls, etc. Be patient with the internet service though, it's decent, but not fast enough by world standards.
What is the student lifestyle like in Quezon City?
If you are a student here, then you just need to worry about the studying part. All other aspects of living will be within reach. Go to a mall and you can already eat, shop, watch a movie, pay the bills, exchange money, do your banking needs, go to the gym, etc.
It is normal to see students filling-up spaces in coffee shops to study at night. Some fast food places are even open 24/7 to cater to throngs of students looking for a place to study.
How much does it cost to live in Quezon City?
Cheaper compared to costs in Europe :) I think prices will be half or a third of what you'd normally pay in Eu.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Quezon City? Is there any advice you can give?
No. You are sure to find a posting about accommodations, just look around. Or you can just Google it.
Is it good to eat out in Quezon City? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Depends on what you like! Just ask around, really :) You can check out places in Katipunan or the now-famous Maginhawa Street.
