Visited multiple times. Had a great time.
What is it like to live in Pula? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Life in Pula is wonderful. It is a small city with a rich culture and has a lot of different places to accomadate everyone's tastes. Public transport is limited only to buses, but because the city is relatively small and everything is concentrated in one place, walking shouldn't be a problem (cca 45min walk from one end of the city to another, including suburbs). Cultural life is quite rich: many presentations, galleries, concerts... especially during the summer. The food is diverse, consisting mainly of different types of pasta and fish. There are many big events that shouldn't be missed when in Pula, like annual Pula Film Festival in the Arena, SeaSplash, Rocktarata and many other.
What is the student lifestyle like in Pula?
Pula has a number of universities which are all in one place with many caffe bars. There is a Club in the centre called Uljanik; all the students come there on weeekends, but even more so on Thursdays and that is why it's called The Student Party. It is amazing. In the summer, many surrounding cities also have great parties, and are easily accessable.
How much does it cost to live in Pula?
For students living on a budget Pula is not exatcly ideal. The food is quite pricey in some places especially in the centre during the summer, but it is not hard to find places to eat traditional dishes if living on a budget. Accomodation is also quite easy to find.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Pula? Is there any advice you can give?
It is very easy to find accomodation in Pula. In the City centre it's more expensive of course. That is why students should look for something in the suburbs or even outside of the City. You shouldn't dismiss the idea thinking it would be too difficult to reach places, because Pula is very small and it's not hard to get somewhere in a short period of time. There is an area outside of the centre called Volme, where students can find nice accomodation easily. It's mainly apartments, there is one nice place called 'Apartmani Nika Volme' and prices range from 8-25 euro depending on the season and number of people. The beach is 5 min walking from there. That place was heaven on Earth.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Croatian food in general is amazing and diverse, but Istrian even more so. Almost everywhere in Pula you can find traditional dishes that are both delicious and cheap. Some of my favourites are fuzi, njoki, pljukanci, all the fish is fresh and good. Istrian wine is also quite tasty, especially red. If you are not an adventurous type when it comes to food, there are excellent pizza places. My favourite pizzeria is Jupiter, in the centre.
What places would you recommend visiting in Pula?
The important historical monuments should deffinitely be seen first without a doubt. Since Pula is around 3 thousand years old there are many monuments where history is wonderfully preserved. Some are The Amphitheatre, The Golden Gate, The Gates of Hercules, The Roman Theatres, etc. If you are a book worm like me, you'll love this really nice recently opened bookstore called Petit that is specialized in exactly Pula, Istria, and Croatia in general. There you can find many books, products and souveniers made in Croatia. If you're not really into history, there are many galleries, pubs, a theatre, and a cinema in the centre. Also in June will be the opening of the first Istrian aquapark a little outside of Pula.
Is it good to eat out in Pula? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, food is wonderful. Almost anywhere in the center you can find traditional istrian cuisine. Istria is famous for the both good food and wine. If you're not really into experimenting when it comes to food, there are great pizza places in Pula. My favourite is Jupiter near the city library, near riva.
Is the nightlife good in Pula? Where is good to go?
Yes. If you're into dressing more fancy, there is a Club on the riva shore called Pietas Julia. It's has become a very popular place recently so it's hard to get in without a calling ahead to let them Know you're coming. It's a club with a few tables to sit, but people are mostly dancing to techno music. There is also a club called Uljanik where the dress code is a little more casual. There is also dancing and they play either rock, pop music or have a dj. There is a big yard so a lot more people can fit in the Club. It is the biggest attraction during the summer.
What advice would you give future students heading to Pula?
This amazing little city will make you fall in love with it. People are also very friendly and aproachable. Almost everyone speaks fluent English, Italian, and German. If you come to Pula, you will never want to leave.
