Pula
Pula is the largest city in Istria County (Croatia's western coast). In the past, Pula became Austria's main naval base, but today it is an important harbour and has many industrial sites.
Pula started to grow up around 180 B. C., when Romans captured the town and built an amphitheatre (Arena), which currently serves as a set for the Pula Film Festival and random concerts.
In 1148 Pula was taken by the Republic of Venice, but Venetians gave it to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After WW1 Pula surrendered to Italy, and after WW2 Pula became part of the Socialist Republic of Croatia.
In Pula you can see a lot of old buildings, and one of them is especially interesting: Zlatna vrata ('Golden Gate'), the town's entrance gate.
