Birthday in the Sun
Two days after the beach experience it was my birthday. It was the first time I would not spend it in Germany but as I have never had a big party for it, that was okay for me. It was just a bit weird that here almost nobody knew that it was my birthday and I am used to feel special that day, but okay. In order to give a small hint I decided to try to bake some chocolate chip cookies (I've never done that) for work.
So the day before my birthday I found a nice recipe in the internet, went to the supermarket to buy everything and started to do them. I am not the best but also not the worst person to bake things, but I didn't have a lot of equipment in the apartment and so I had to guess the quantities a bit. I didn't have a good feeling but as I had already started I continued until the dough was ready. It was already late but I had to let it in the fridge for some hours so I knew I would have to stay up long in order to finish them. But that was okay, the evening before my birthday was always a bit exciting and boring at the same time. I think almost everyone knows that feeling. So I was happy to be busy. In the meantime I prepared my food for the next day and watched TV and finally I could put the cookies into the oven. Actually, I was really surprised because they were looking great when I took them out of the oven and that was motivating me. I tried one and it tasted like the cookies from Subway - which is very good as I would say.
So I finished the rest of the dough and went to bed, happy about my baking-success and happy about my birthday the next day. When I woke up I checked my phone and had already some phone calls from my family but not much time to answer. I called anyway and felt better and not that lonely than I would have assumed. Then I had to get ready for work and prepared my cookies. Arrived at work only the other intern knew that it was my birthday, but thanks to the cookies the others also noticed it. And, even more important - they all liked my cookies! They didn't stay in the kitchen for a long time, after 1 or 2 hours every single cookie was gone. That made me happy - more than all the birthday wishes. Well, the rest of the day continued quite normal - work, work and work. The other intern had the idea to go into the city centre to have a cocktail at night, so I asked in our Whatsapp group if anyone would join. As usual, nobody answered at the beginning so I had to wait.
After work I decided to go to the supermarket to buy my favorite chocolate (which was extremely expensive but it was my birthday!) and I passed by the "loro guy" who was always at my way from/to work. He offered to take pictures while you were holding some perrots which are the most famous animals at the Canary Islands. Usually I don't support that because I think the animals should not be treated as pets but there was a cute little perrot coming towards me when I stopped shortly and so I decided to make another present to myself - pictures with the perrots. It was a really nice experience, even if one of them bit my ear while he was sitting at my shoulder. "He's nice, you don't need to be afraid" - Yes...very nice. I payed a fortune for the pictures, but okay. I only would do it once.
Happy because of the pictures and the chocolate I came home and decided to go a bit to the beach and enjoy the nice weather. Later, there was still nobody who answered to my birthday-cocktail-question which made me a bit sad, because even the other intern told me that she didn't feel so well and wouldn't come. But as I almost didn't want to go anymore 3 were saying that they would come, so I changed my clothes and went to the cocktail bar. Meanwhile my boyfriend called me and so we talked while I was walking. He is calling quite rarely so I was happy about his call. He told me I should check my mail box, maybe I would find a letter there. That made me even happier - I wouldn't have expected to receive a letter from him! But first, the cocktail.
I arrived and was, as usual, the first one. 10 minutes later, there was another girl coming and one of the guys. He told us that the other one would come a bit later so we could already enter the bar. Suddenly, there was somebody coming from the right - with a birthday cake with candles on it! Something I would have never expected - I only knew those people for 2 weeks or something. It was so nice of them and really made my birthday a special day. After some cocktails we went home because everyone had to work the next day but it was a really nice evening I would never forget, maybe one of the most special birthdays I had in the 20 years.
I decided to let the letter in the mailbox until tomorrow so I would have something to make me happy the next day, too.
