Experience in University of Pécs, Hungary by Ádám

Generally, what is University of Pecs like?

I study at the Faculty of Engineering (I study architecture) so this is what I can provide more information about. It's kind of a small faculty, but it's fairly equipped, innovative and there's an emphasis on technical education and creativity.

What are the facilities like?

The faculty has been renovated a couple years ago, it has IT labs and technical classrooms with sufficient equipments. For the architecture and other design projects there's a studio building off the campus but it's just an 8 minutes walk from the main building. There's a tennis court, a football pitch and a basketball court around the Faculty so if you want to do some sports between/before/after/instead of classes, you have the opportunity. There's also a library in the campus so books of the fields of your study are at your hands though it's not as good as the Main University Library.

What are the tutors like?

Well, I can only share my experiences about a small share of tutors, but they're really good. The classes aren't big at all, so they can pay more attention to each student. Maths and Mechanics professors are willing to help anyone and they sometimes offer some kind of extra classes for those who have problems or doubts about the subjects. The tutors on Architectural Design are really open, flexible and they have fresh ideas.

Are the lessons easy in University of Pecs?

I don't think so. Architecture students have a lot of assignments but I guess that's the case in every architecture school in the world.

Does the University organize activities? What are they like?

There are trips, seminaries, sports/cultural events and workshops organized by the University or the different faculties, and there's also the University Festival in spring. We also have an ESN organisation so international students have extra opportunities to learn to know the town and it's student life.

Do you think the teaching is of a high quality?

Yes, I do. I don't have references of other Hungarian universities but I really like it in my faculty. The architecture project classes are sort of like workshops and we are encouraged to be brave and creative with our design but we're also required to pay attention to the structural and constructional aspect of a project so it's really pragmatic.

Are there any stories you can share?

Pécs is not a big city at all but it has a great atmosphere and is full of students. Everything is close and you'll definitely find your type of places to go out to and friends to hang out with!
