Prague - A Magical Destination

Heaven on Earth is how I would describe Prague! To anyone who's on the verge of deciding on going to Prague, my advice would be: Just do it!

1. Transport

Prague has one of the best developed transport systems. Very organised and for the 6 months I've spent there, I have NEVER seen a public transport option being late. The wide variety of trams, buses, the metro cover the whole city at all hours! It's extremely cheap too! For students, it was a mere 24 euros transport ticket for 3 months!

2. Locals and Landscape

Prague is simply stunning! Everywhere you go you see these beautifully crafted, aged buildings, cobbled pathways and lots of greenery!

The locals? Extremely friendly! I'm an Asian and personally I vouch for the locals when I say that they were all very welcoming and helped me out a lot! It's easy to get by around the city speaking only English. However, knowledge of Czech or German would definitely have you at an advantage!

3. Culture and Sightseeing

So much to see, so little time! One of the most beautiful places to see is the Charles Bridge near the River Vltava and the Prague Castle. (Shown in image) Seriously amazing!

Just standing on the bridge would be enough to make any depressed person happy! It's so peaceful and mesmerising. As for the castle, it would take at least 2 days to fully explore the cultural blast in there!

Personally, I would recommend travelling around the Old Town just by tram or foot with one of the locals instead of signing up for a tour.. Some sights to not be missed are the Prague replica of the lock bridge and the Eiffel Tower, the Astronomical Clock and the dancing building of Prague! Also check out the Vaclavske Namesti for great restaurants and shopping!

If you like shopping, check out the mall at Chodov which is one of the biggest and has a brilliant collection of clothes, books, gadgets, suitcase.. almost anything!

Prague though rich in cultural heritage and history, is just as modernised, if not more, than the other European cities!

4. Cuisine and Alcohol

Being Asian, I generally am quite demanding with my food. There were however many options that pleased me. My favourite was Golden Tikka on U Nemocnice which had Indian food that left me pleasantly surprised (there's a student discount too!) and Sushi Maru which had the best sushi I've ever tasted. Anything you want to eat, you're bound to find it in Prague! I even found a Sri Lankan restaurant and that's saying something since Sri Lanka (also referred to as Ceylon) is just this tiny island in the Indian Ocean. The food is cheap and delightful with the added advantage of large portions and pleasant service.

Alcohol addiction? You'll get it the minute you land here! 0.4 euros for one litre of good beer at the supermarket! And the bars have it flowing out of taps for around 1 euro a tall glass.

5. Expenses and Part-time Jobs

One of the most student friendly and inexpensive cities!

Everything is cheap! And you get discounts on top of it!

Alberts Supermarket always has discounts going on for fruits, veggies, milk, bread and so much more.

Special student discounts for books, stationary, Starbucks, public transport tickets, McDonald's and more!

Rent would be around 200 euros in the centre. 20 minutes away if would only be 100 euros with Internet and utilities.

There's also a lot of CUK dormitories that are quite good. They even have rooms with en suite for 150 euros. The staff is good. And many of them have baskethall courts, gym, restaurants etc.

Basically you could live very comfortably and healthily with 350 euros a month.

6. Party animal? You're in the right place!

Study hard and party harder! 7 days a week, every week.

  • Entrance free!
  • Free first drinks for women! Yipeee chivalry ain't dead!
  • Amazing boat parties (not so common)
  • Splendid costume parties (quite common during Christmas, Easter, Passover)

Just get down here! You'll never regret it! I count my days in Prague as some of my best ever and you will too! Prague will make you fall in love all over again!
