My Erasmus Experience in Prague

Why did you choose to go to Prague, Czech Republic?

A professor at my university in Spain recommended it to me. Apparently, Charles University is prestigious (local people were surprised when I told them that I studied there). I'd also been there before and really liked the city.

How long did your scholarship last? How much were you paid?

One year, and I received the Erasmusu+ scholarship, 1, 750 euros all in one go in mid-November.

What's the student life like in Prague?

Great, the city is very lively and there's loads to do. You end up spending more time with Erasmus students though, as the Czech people aren't particular open.

Would you recommend the city and the University or Prague to other students?

100%.

What's the food like in the Czech Republic?

There's isn't that much traditional Czech food as such, since due to the amount of times the country has been invaded, it's lost parts of its culture. Sugar-coated duck is definitely a winner, as is goulash and Trdelnik dessert.

Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Prague?

No, I did it all online and through an agency. They were called FSS services if I remember rightly.

How expensive is living in Prague?

A flat will cost you around 400 to 500 euros a month with a little left over, whereas a room in a hall of residence will only cost you 250 euros, though the buildings tend to be much older and shabbier.

How are you finding the language? Have you signed up to a language class at the university?

Impossible, I only learned how to say basic phrases. The rest of the time I just spoke English, which all the young people tend to speak fluently.

What's the cheapest way of getting to Prague from your home city?

By plane, look on Skyscanner and use Iberia for the first and last flight, since they have discounts for Erasmus students.

What about eating out in Prague? What are your favourite places?

The Tavern, they do amazing burgers there. Hlučná samota for traditional Czech food. For chicken wings, try the BBQ Bar Planet Žižkov.

What does Prague have to offer in terms of culture?

Apart from the typical things listed in the guide books, there are hundreds of beautiful parks to visit - for example, Riegrovy Sady offers amazing views over Prague at sunset. The same goes for the outskirts of Karlstejn Castle, especially in the autumn. Go to the Czech Philharmonic too, the concerts are really cheap and fantastic quality.

Do you have any advice for future students coming to Prague?

Drink beer, spend as little time with other Spaniards as possible, explore everything the city has to offer, bring ham with you in your suitcase and make time to study too, as it's not all plain sailing, at least not at Charles University.
