Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Sabina
What is it like to live in Prague? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Prague is really easy, the city is not so big, you can get whenever you want in a while. Prague is very touristic city but you can find the most beautiful places out of the city center.
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
When you are student in Prague, you have many opportunities what to do. Student community is really live there. The best places for students are around Národní street, I.P. Pavlova and Náměstí Míru.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
Living in Prague is cheaper than in other European cities. Food and drinks are cheap, usually, food in restaurants costs about 4 Euros, beer is for 1 or 1,5 Euros, glass of wine about 2 Euros. Public transport costs 1 Euro for 30 minutes.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Prague? Is there any advice you can give?
I think it is not difficult to find accommodation in Prague when you are tourist and you can speak English. When you are looking for a flat share, you can get one room for 200 Euros per month. The prices of whole appartement start at 400 Euros, it depends on the place and size. The most expensive places for living are in historical center, in Vinohrady and Letná. That is of course because these places are the most beautiful ones :) and with an easy access everywhere.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Czech food can be heavy for some Europeans. Typical Czech cousine is made of pork or beef, dumplings or potatoes, sauces... So when you are looking for something echt Czech, ask for Svíčková (beef sirloin with vegetable and cream sauce, dumplings and cranberries), Vepřo-knedlo-zelo (pork-dumplings-cabbage), řízek (schnitzel), Vepřové koleno (pork knee), guláš (goulash), hovězí vývar (beef broth). Don't try it in the touristic places, find a local pub. Or try Lokál (http://lokal-dlouha.ambi.cz/cz/#menu). But if you don't like Czech food, you can find many international restaurants in the city. In last few years, many vegetarian or vegan restaurants and bistros appeared. Also Asian cousine is popular in Prague.
Is it good to eat out in Prague? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It's definitely good to eat out but you have to know the places. For good Czech cousine, go for example to Lokál (http://lokal-dlouha.ambi.cz/cz/#menu). It's not the most cheapest choice, but it's good quality with the best Pilsner Urquell beer in Prague. When you want something more exotic, go to Vietnamese restaurant Miss Saigon (http://www.miss-saigon.cz/fotogalerie/) or Kebab bistro Lanka (https://foursquare.com/v/bistro-lanka-d%C3%B6ner-kebab/4ec64d625c5ce271bc18bb55). You can get unforgettable burgers in Dish (http://www.dish.cz/). When you want just something small, but really good with a glass of French wine, go to Le Caveau (https://foursquare.com/v/le-caveau/4e8709badab4faec25e3f2bc). For delicious homemade soups, go to Polévkárna (https://foursquare.com/v/pol%C3%A9vk%C3%A1rna/4bdabb90c79cc928a1837fe9). But there are of course many many other good places in Prague :).
What advice would you give future students heading to Prague?
