Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Roberta
What is it like to live in Prague? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Prague is without any doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is full of history and interesting stories. It is truly a multucultural city where you can meet people from all over the world. And the best thing about Prague: it has cheap and great beer.
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
There are plenty of places where students, especially the international ones are going. Those places are mostly located out of the city centre as it is cheaper for them. Students are usually meeting for some kind of beverage or to eat something mostly on Friday evenings. Student life in Prague is really diverse. You can go to drink a beer to Strahov or to a great place near Višehrad.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
Living in Prague is quite cheap. I personally thought it would be much more expensive. Sometimes beer is even cheaper than bottled water! Costs for a month are approximately 400 euros for an ordinary student.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Prague? Is there any advice you can give?
There are many rooms in shared flats available. You just have to search on the internet and you´ll find plenty of them. And the accomodation is quite cheap and mostly in good conditions. The private ones, on the other hand, are pretty cool, but could cost more than a room in a shared flat.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is amazing. Maybe not as diverse as in other countries but still pretty good. My favourite dish is definitely "svíčková" or duck/goose with cabbage and potato dumplings... You gotta try that out!
What places would you recommend visiting in Prague?
When coming to Prague, there is no chance to miss typical places like the castle with the cathedral, Charles Bridge, the old town square, Wenceslas square... those are all beautiful places with incvredible architecture. There are also lovely parks along the river so in summer there is no better place to eat your burrito (burrito loco - I think it´s on tram stop "Národní" is open 24/7).
Is it good to eat out in Prague? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is a great idea to eat outside. There are places which are just heaven! For example, La bodeguita del medio in metro station "Staroměstská" is quite expensive, but incredible... as well as James Dean with their amazing burgers. Then there are of course more affordable places like Strahov monastery near the castle, st. Norbert where they have their own delicious beer and the food is amazing at affordable prices. Then near "Vyšehrad" there is one pub called "U Basenthú" where you can also find very cheap and good food. I cannot forget Burrito Loco which offers one really big burrito with loads of yummy stuff in it. There is also a Balkan reastaurant called Olive Point with amazing fresh grilled squads, it is near metro station "Náměstí Míru". The last restaurant I would like to mention is Restaurant Havana near "Na Míčánkách" bus stop. They have an amazing creamy arborio with parmesan cheese.
Is the nightlife good in Prague? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is quite good, there are loads of places to go. Among popular clubs belongs definitely NEBE or for oldies James Dean. There is also one very popular place near James Dean called Roxy. As you will walk the town on friday night you will definitely find a place for you.
What advice would you give future students heading to Prague?
People from prague can be jerks sometimes but other czechs are really lovely, mostly the ones from Moravia. You don´t need to speak czech, it is really difficult and quite useless. All the bars and restaurants speak English or German or Russian sometimes even Spanish. My last advice is enjoy and take care.
