Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Petr
What is it like to live in Prague? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I can describe it from the point of view of the gallerist, student and custodian at the most turistic monument in Prague - Astronomical Clock Tower. Contemporary Art in Prague sucks so much comparing to Berlin, London, New York City or other centres in Prague. On the other hand there is so much of old art, Baroque, Gothic or Art nouveau wchi is on really great level. As a Student - studying in Prague is very specific - I reccomend it as an experience, but not as a full time few years studying. I definitelly recommend Prague, I would say for maximum 10 months of stay. Not longer. The city is like a mediaval maze with lot of touristic shitty souvenirs shops with the biggest rubbish you can imagine. It is getting better, but it is enormous. During the night there is so many disgusting men offering you pussy and cabarets so if you live in the center, you couldnt arrive home without meeting at least 5 of them. Other districts out of the center ar beautiful, for example Vinohrady, Letná or Žižkov. Prague is badly connected by streets, it is on hills and trasportation from one district to aonther is sometimes hard by foot, bicycle or car, but public transport is the best in whole Europe, I have to admit that.
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
If you are student and you have ISIC, you will get at least 10% discount everywhere. Partying is not so big comparing to Madrid or London, but it is super cheap - Beer is 1.5 E, bottle of wine 3 E, Junk food around 4 E. There are plenty of bars.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
Cheap, it is possible to find a great room with tall celling in the center or 10 min. by tram to the center for 300 E, month ticket for public transport is 10 E, standard lunch is for 5 E, drinks are super cheap.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Prague? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it is not, there are plenty of possibilities, mostly in czech. I reccomend to find a czech friend and ask him for help, you will find definitelly something on FB pages, spolubydleni.cz, prague craiglist, etc.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is full of fat, very delicious, big portions, and mostly from pork. My favourite ones are pork knee, trout, duck, chicken soup.
What places would you recommend visiting in Prague?
Gallery Plevel in Karlín Studios, Prague Castle, Jewish Museum, Letná Beer Garden, Kampa, Nový Svět, Grebovka.
Is it good to eat out in Prague? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Definitelly! Resturant Blatnička in Michalska st, Lokál at Dlouhá st, La Gare, Kulaťák.
Is the nightlife good in Prague? Where is good to go?
It is pretty normal. Friends or Termix (Gay Bars), Chapeau Rouge, NoD, Bars at Žižkov, Pilot, Final Club.
What advice would you give future students heading to Prague?
Be prepared for shitty service on many levels, people are underpaid, it is usual they dont speak english and they are rude. Service didnt change yet from Eastern commusnism.
