Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Ernesto Icogo
What is it like to live in Prague? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I have been to Prague in two separate occassion. In between travels, I made several stops-over in Prague, which, I think, is the most beautiful city in Europe.
My first impression of Prague is something like cosmopolitan and mystical. Just like a typical European city, I guess it's more of a chaotic city rather than orderly. I never had a hint and I was mistaken.
Prague doesn't have to much light and the atmosphere is cool and friendly. With the castle and the famous Charles bridge in the background, the city looks even more medieval and religious.
I learned about Prague keeping its original edifices and buildings because the city was spared from the ruin of World War 2. The Czech chose rather not to oppose the invasion to keep the sacred statues that adorned the city.
I chose to stay in the city center for two nights. I would rather keep the money for better use like visiting interesting places instead of spending lavishly in a first-class hotel.
The city is beautiful. historical and a strong characteristic brought by Roman Catholicism, Bohemian and Moravian culture and pretty artwork (Bohemian glass and dolls as well as intricate chess pieces).
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
Student life in Prague is interesting. There are lots of historical places to visit. Two days wouldn't be enough. For example, the famous Petrin Castle and Karlov Most in the city center is worth seeing.
The "John Lennon" freedom wall is worth visiting, although I wasn't able to do it because the weather would allow. I also heard of Kutna Hora or the Skull Church, which friend said was worth visiting.
I enjoyed the overlooking hills with its cool and windy atmosphere. At first glance, I was awed by the Czech transport system, simple and efficient, clean and orderly.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
I do not have a clear grasp of the spends in Prague because of limited time when I visited the city. However, I think the expenses are worth it.
Maybe this is one of the reasons why Prague is one of the favorite destinations of tourist and travelers in Europe. Aside from its central position with the EU zone, Prague has lots to offer.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Prague? Is there any advice you can give?
No, not really. My advise? Keep your choice to those hostels within the city center, some minutes of walk to favorite and famous places of interest. Except maybe if you have friends who are willing to share their flat and you saved a lot.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The tredlnik, the famous Czech cinnamon, should always a part of the food list. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to taste the tredlnik. It was a sidestreet Vietnamese restaurant who defeated the tredlnik.
Inside that Vietnamese restaurant, I sat down and enjoyed Asian food, Is it obvious? As an Asian, myself, I couldn't last the day without rice. But, I'm learning, continuously learning.
When I reached the Tredlnik store, my stomach was filled to the brim. Do not forget to order, at least, a bottle of beer, specifically, Staropramen.
What places would you recommend visiting in Prague?
I would recommend the area where the Petrin Castle is located, Charles Bridge and the series of parallel bridges along the Vltava River.
The John Lennon Freedom Wall is highly recommended. But, it was difficult to find during rainy days.
The Levitation Street Performers of Prague is recommended although it's not impossible that you will see them in the streets of Prague, especially, if it is not raining outside.
Is it good to eat out in Prague? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I stopped to take my lunch in the Old Town. There was a Vietnamese restaurant quite hidden from the crowd in which I chose to eat. There are not much people around. Outside, the rain fell lightly as I enjoyed a typical dish of rice, meat and vegetable.
I also ordered a bottle of Staropramen.
Is the nightlife good in Prague? Where is good to go?
I haven't had the opportunity to enjoy the other side of Prague. During the evening, I spent most of time in Charles Bridge appreciating the bridge, itself, and the Roman Catholic statues of saints and martyrs in its pedestal.
During the end of the day, I enjoyed the scene of people enjoying the nightlife at the Old Town, drinking, merry-making, talking and having fun.
It was raining hard when I decided to go back to the hostel.
What advice would you give future students heading to Prague?
The advice is to stay and be accommodated in the city center or Old Town. Most places of interest are located within the vicinity of the Old Town. With these, it is practical to move around and save a lot of time and resources.
