Erasmus Experience in Prague, the Czech Republic by Javi

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Mine in particular was for 9 months (from September to June). It was from 2009/10 and they gave me €600 a month (I'm from Andalusia). Nowadays, I don't know how much you would get...

What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?

There are actually a lot of Erasmus students here. Generally, they're who you'll hang out with most, since, at least at the university (Czech National Library of Technology), we are separated from Czech people (all of our classes were taught in English).

Would you recommend the city and the university of Prague to other students?

Actually, yes. The city, as well as the university are really worth seeing.

What is the food like there?

Seeing as it's nothing like Spanish food, it is acceptable. There's too much meat and too many sauces but there are lots restaurants where you can have a good meal. Anyway, at least for my taste, the canteens at the university and at the residence leave much to be desired...

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Prague?

The university found my accommodation for me in a pretty shabby university residence, but it was super cheap.

How much does it cost to live in Prague?

I spend around €450 a month on average (€100 of which was spent on my rent at the residence), including travelling costs.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

Czech is quite a difficult language and I didn't actually learn much at all. I went on a course at the university at an A1 level, but I really only went to get the credits for it. At any rate, it's a good place to improve your English, which always comes in handy.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Prague?

  • Karlovy Lazne (a club with 5 floors full of foreigners and no Czech people)
  • Chapeau Rouge (a bar to go out to in the week)
  • Cross Club (an indescribable place, they usually play drum & bass or reggae music, but you have to go at least once, it's worth it for its aesthetic)
  • And to eat in Prague? What are some of your places to go?

Smíchovský radnicní sklípek, Preslova 4, Praga 5 - is incredible.
