Erasmus Experience in Prague, the Czech Republic by Carmen Mª

Why did you choose to go to Prague, the Czech Republic?

It was the destination I was assigned and I don't have any regrets about going there actually. I didn't know anything about Prague and once it was assigned to me as my destination, I started to read about the city and I fell in love.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

9-10 months. I got around €500 a month in financial aid.

What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?

The student lifestyle here is great, I had the Erasmus lifestyle experience specifically, but it's just as good. It's 100% recommendable.

Would you recommend the city and the university in Prague to other students?

Yes, absolutely, I had already fallen in love with it from what I had read before coming here, but once I was there I loved the country even more. It's 1000% recommendable.

What is the food like there?

It's not a very good place for picky people to come, but if you love eating everything and trying new things, it's ideal. I think the food is incredible.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Prague?

Not at all, first they offer you a place in a student residence, and once you're there, you can change to living in a flat. But they do put the prices up for people who aren't Czechs. However, overall the residences are very cheap.

How much does it cost to live in Prague?

I'll use myself as an example, in the beginning I paid €120-140 a month for the residence, depending on the value of the currency. And €270-280 for a flat, it was a great place and close to the city centre. Then transport costs €30 for the whole trimestre, and if you don't need to go far from your flat, you don't really need it. Food and partying is very affordable and so is travelling. I think I spend around €400-500 a month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

The language is very difficult, but the vast majority of us took at least one Czech course.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Prague from your home city?

By plane, I think, I'm not sure. I always flew from Madrid.

Do you have any advice for students coming to Prague in the future?

Enjoy the city as much as you can, visit everything, many times over. There are lots of spots in the city (parks) with very beautiful views, when the weather is nice, it's really great. The partying, of course, is good, too. I want to go back and live there again. I recommend it to everyone!
