Erasmus experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Marije
Why did I chose to go to Prague, Czech Republic?
Prague is located in the centre of Europe, which means that not only you are in a terrific city but you can also travel cheaply to other cities and countries. Besides, Prague is very beautiful, has amazing parks which aren't big tourist attractions, has cheap and reliable transportation methods, good food and every night bars and disco's are open to party. In fact, you can find everything here for little money.
What's included in the scholarship? For which period is the scholarship?
The Erasmus grant depends on the amount of months you are residing in Prague. I believe the amount lies around 170 euros per month?
How is the student life in Prague?
I believe that more than three times a week the Erasmus department organises activities such as beer meetings or free gatherings for Erasmus students. I am attending free salsa lessons for Erasmus students, go to the beer meetings every week and a cheap trip is organised every weekend which you can join.
These trips include hiking trips, visiting Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, Croatia or spring break. You can also enter every bar with friends, and because everything is very cheap you tend to meet up at some place instead of your own apartment. But it's also a possibility to do a picknick in the park.
Would you recommend the University of Prague to other students?
Absolutely!
What's the food like?
It's cheap and very good.
How long does it take to find a room in Prague?
It doesn't take very long, you have several possibilities you can choose from. It's possible to rent a cheap room with less privacy, or pay more and resident in a shared flat or own appartement.
How much does life cost you in Prague?
At the university campus you pay around 150 euros per month for your room, which gives you a bed and shared room and the rest of the facilities to share with other people. You pay around 250 to 350 euros for a good appartment with lots of privacy, and 400 euros or more for your own studio.
How was the language? Did you learn the language before you went to Prague? Are there language courses you can attend at the university?
Language courses are available everywhere, but the accent is more difficult because it's a Slavic language. But people really appreciate it if you can Czech back to them.
What was the cheapest way for you to travel to Prague from your home?
It all depends on the amount of stuff you are planning to bring with you. You can take the bus, which takes 9 hours, or the train, which takes 4 hours. By plane it's around one hour flight time. I chose for the last option, and for 30 euros with two suitcases I was there before I knew it.
Can you tell about the night life? How are the clubs in Prague?
They were fantastic! Prague is home to the biggest club in Europe, which is five stories.
There are great alternative disco's or you can dance in between locals.
What do you recommend for a nice meal in Prague?
Literally everywhere.
Does Prague have any cultural highlights you can visit?
Yes, there are a lot of churches and cathedrals, the astronomical clock, museums, parks which give you the best views over the city, the changing of the guards at government buildings, Charles' Bridge, literally everything is worth a visit!
Do you have any other advice for future students that are planning to come to Prague?
Choose Prague! You will not regret it, it is the best location to spend 6 months or a year on your own.
