Erasmus Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Friedy
Why did you choose to go to Prague, Czech Republic?
As I wanted to discover a city in Eastern Europe, Prague was my first choice since it is such a beautiful city and its inhabitants are really friendly. I checked out the Metropolitan University that I could attend via the Erasmus programme and since it has got many interesting courses, my decision was made. I also appreciate that it is very close to my hometown in Germany, but it is still a foreign country, with a strange language and a interesting culture.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
One semester. I receive 240 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
It is very pleasant. There are many international students and since Prague offers lots of possibilities, it is easy to get in touch with each other. The university is great and the courses in the university are rather easy. I didn't have so much free time since alot of time.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Prague to other students?
Yes, I definitely would. Although the courses are easy, I love the fact that I can improve my English. The city itself has much to offer: culture, history, beer, nightlife and romantic moments.
What is the food like?
Well, it is very cheap to go out to eat here, which is lovely. The restaurants are all very good. Czechs are definitely good in brewing beer and in making good chocolate and trdelnik. Otherwise the food is similar to the one in Germany. Czechs also love meat a lot.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Prague?
Yes it did. Much of time and patience.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
420 Euro per month, but I must admit to have an extremely beautiful room in a private flat with a great view and a great location, too.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Not Czech. Czech is a language I would probably never use. Most of the people living in this city don't even speak Czech and somehow you can always find a person nearby who is able to help you in English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Prague from your city?
By train or by car. It takes me about 4 to 5 hours to get to Berlin.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Prague?
Once I have been on a boat party, which was lovely. Other than that there are many clubs, pubs, bars, karaoke places you can go to. As I am not much into partying I can only recommend good restaurants rather than clubs.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Prague?
Yes! Now I just don't know where to start... I like the Hlubina, Hostinc U Mateje Kotbry, U Fleku, Ginger & Fred, Dunams... and many more.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Castle, the Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and Dancing House are definitely the best sites. The most exciting thing is to experience the spring in Prague which I can't wait.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Prague in the future?
Look out for a nice buddy friend who can show you around. It is very easy to get used to the life in Prague, since Czechs are easy, friendly, always open and ready to help you out. It might be difficult to find a nice place that doesn't cost too much, but there are many, though.
