Erasmus Experience in Prague, Czech Republic by Astrid
Why did you choose to go to Prague, Czech Republic?
I have been in Prague before: this city is amazing. . So beautiful and has a great international atmosphere. On top of that I needed a university offering classes in English. Additionally, it's really cheap here.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I have a scholarship for 5 months (1 semester). I receive around 250 Euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Prague?
It's up to yourself how much time and effort you put into the university. But (at least for my university) there are ways to pass the exams really easily. I still spend quite a lot of time in the library, but I have a lot of free time and there is ALWAYS something going on.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Prague to other students?
Yes, definitely. I am studying at the Charls University, exactly at the third year of medicine. It is really well organized with a committed and helpful coordinator. My friends told me that not all the faculties are as pleasing.
What is the food like?
Czech food is really stuffing, perfect for winter months. Also it's usually really cheap even for really big dishes. For example, there is Gulasch, Dumplings, fried cheese... I really enjoyed it, but not everybody likes it (especially vegetarians will have troubles). But for those there are a lot of alternatives (Pizza ect).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Prague?
No. I found a beautiful shared flat over Airbnb.
How much does it cost to live in Prague?
I pay around 400 Euro per month. I pay more than most of my friends though, but I live more central than them. It's possible to find a lot more cheaper accommodations.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Many faculties offer language courses, but not all of them are for free. I had to pay around 70 Euros. Not everyone speaks English here, communication can be a little hard sometimes, but the Czech Language is really hard even though I was taking some Czech classes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Prague from your city?
From Munich there are really cheap buses and trains.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Prague?
Zizkov (Prague 3) is great for bar crawls. It is really popular amongs the Czech people and in Bukowsky Bar you'll get the best cocktails in town. If you want to go partying in Prague 1, you got the right place. Chapeauroux or Roxy are good clubs. For predrinks drinks, I recommend Popo Caffee or Beer Museum.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Prague?
Pizza Nuova at Namesti Republiky has the best Pizza.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Kutna Hora
Kutna Hora (Unesco world heritage: small town around 1h far from Prague with a fascinating Church all decorated with human bones) and Karlsteijn (beautiful castle around 1 hour away by train). Trains are incredibly cheap here!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Prague in the future?
Just enjoy every day of it- the city is amazing!
