Experience in Port Orange, United States by Alexandra

What is it like to live in Port Orange? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's quite close to the beach, and there are several universities nearby, so for students it's a nice enough area. It can be rather quiet though, as the majority of the population in the area is comprised of retirees. There are a few nightclubs if you head further north, and the food isn't bad. There not much by way of variety, so if you like dim sum, and some of the more exotic (by american standards) cuisines you'll have to be willing to travel a bit to find them.

What is the student lifestyle like in Port Orange?

It's not much of a party city, but there are concerts in the nearby towns, and the schools are good. Embry Riddle especially has a wonderful reputation for engineering, aeronautics, meteorology, and business programs.

How much does it cost to live in Port Orange?

The cost of living in the port orange area differs drastically by location. The closer to the river or beach you are, the more expensive the accommodations. You can usually find a position as a roommate, or a shared flat for under $500 /€370 a month, if you know where to look.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Port Orange? Is there any advice you can give?

Not terribly, craigslist, roommate finder, and the local newspapers all have plenty of options. Just be sure to know your budget, know if utilities are included, and ALWAYS see the property and the owners/other tenants before committing to anything.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is pretty standard american fare for the most part. There's a lot of fresh seafood to be found, and it's quite reasonably priced.

What places would you recommend visiting in Port Orange?

The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, The marine science center, the NASCAR speedway(if you're into that sort of thing), and of course.... the beach!

Is it good to eat out in Port Orange? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

You can definitely find good places to eat, but you have to really look. I'm partial to the Zen Bistro(Asian) , The Garlic(anything with garlic in it), Martinis(the menu varies), and Houligans(sports bar with amazing wings).

Is the nightlife good in Port Orange? Where is good to go?

There isn't really a nightlife in port orange, but if you go further north you can find a few nightclubs. Beach street is always fun, and has some lovely restaurant and curio shoppes. They also have a little theatre called Cinematique that shows foreign and independent films, as well as serving some rather good food!
