A Hidden Jem
Porto Meloxo is a fishing town in O Grove, dedicated to fishing and cultivating mussels. Around the vicinity of Porto Meloxo, we can find traditional fishing boats dedicated to fishing for shellfish, riverbank carpentry and old salt mines. It is said that this area has the best mussels in the world. On the outskirts of this port there are lots of punting boats where locals cultivate the precious mussels.
It is my favourite port in the area, the best, as it brings together the beautify of the Atlantic Ocean with the green and marvellous Galician hills.
It is a magical place, next to the children's park and the neighbours association. You can find the ruins of the Escuredo Facotry, an old canning factory that closed its doors in the '70s. The canning industry continues to have a great importance for the economy of this town. These ruins belong to different neighbours, former factory workers who the company "rewarded" with small fractions of the factory when they were unable to execute payments and therefore closed down.
If you are lucky enough to visit this place, I would recommend that you take advantage of it and stop to have a bite to eat at one of the restaurants:
- Porto Bar: Traditional and tasty food. In summer, as by tradition, they have to set up a grill on the street and prepare the fish on the hot coals. It is the tastiest and the cheapest in the area, and it has outstanding views.
- Meloxiera Tavern: This has a local, friendly, efficient, welcoming environment with beautiful views. They always vary their menu as well, make sure you always go with their suggestions!
Their decoration in this local tavern is very original, made to promote Galician artistsm using their facilities as an exhibition space. On my last visit here, I could enjoy the works of art and sculpture by Pablo Barreiro and Diego Vites.
This tavern and its cooking brings an innovative mix of typical dishes, fused with different flavours of the world to Porto Meloxo. It creates the sense of travelling without you having to leave your seat! Excellent products, innovative, elaborate and successful combinations, all accompanied with a good glass of wine. Let yourself be advised by their team, they never fail!
If you're fortunate and you are coming in June, you should know that here it is traditional to celebrate the magical night of San Juan (Saint John). It is an evening full of offers that begin on the night of the 23rd and last until the early morning of the 24th. In addition to bonfires, meals and music, there are always traditional games for young and old, and a place to enjoy. Mandatory stop on your travels!
