What is it like to live in Oxford? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city is vibrant and humming with life at all hours. It is the perfect marriage of a rich and deep history and leading development and modern thinking. Oxford itself has a very young community that is active and involved both between the colleges and with the wider community. There are restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets throughout the city. The colleges are central components and form a tapestry of architectural gems. It is a brilliant place to live, with culture and history around every corner, not to mention how alive it can make you feel to be a part of history being written.

What is the student lifestyle like in Oxford?

The student lifestyle in Oxford in a single word is intense. Oxford students work hard and play hard, managing on as little sleep as possible during term time. The nightlife should not be underestimated, but on top of the usual clubbing scene there are many alternatives, with cocktail and wine bars, ice cream cafes, many theatres and cinemas screening alternative movies, as well as all the college activities.

How much does it cost to live in Oxford?

Life in Oxford can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. There is plenty to do that does not require you to spend money. Additionally college bars and department cafes charge less than the average so I would not let cost discourage you from applying.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Oxford? Is there any advice you can give?

Accommodation outside of the college system is difficult, especially if you are looking for short-term.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food options are varied and cater for all palettes, I would particularly recommend the Wednesday lunchtime market in Gloucester Green!

What places would you recommend visiting in Oxford?

The Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers Museum, not only are they wonderfully curated with specimens to rival the London equivalent, but the building is architecturally magnificent. The libraries are incredible and it's well worth working your way through them as you battle with a tough assignment or as a source of inspiration. The Botanical Gardens by Magdalen are enchanting and University Parks and Port Meadow are other green spaces well worth visiting to clear your head.

Is it good to eat out in Oxford? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Little Clarendon Street is always a safe bet.

Is the nightlife good in Oxford? Where is good to go?

Park End (or Lava Ignite) is my recommended club, particularly on Wednesday evenings. Other than that, the Duke of Cambridge, Love Jericho, Raoul's and Freud's are all fantastic cocktail bars for an enjoyable evening out.

What advice would you give future students heading to Oxford?

Make the most of all the opportunities, experience everything to the max, don't let work get you down - you are doing better than you think. Get out of your college and your department and meet new people through clubs, societies and the Union. Terms go so quickly so sleep during the vacations!
