Erasmus Experience in Osnabrück, Germany by Büşra
Why did you choose to go to Osnabrück, Germany?
I chose Germany 'cause of the transportation, language. And Germany has so many neighbors such as Holland, Denmark, Austria. I thought that I can easily travel to that countries.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship was for just 4 months. But I stayed for 6 months. It was 400 euros per months.
What is the student lifestyle like in Osnabrück?
You are mostly hanging out with the international. You are living in dormitories. And the most beautiful part is living with too many people. Every week, at least 3 days in a week, you have events and parties. If anyone wants party, can come to Osna!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Osnabrück to other students?
Yes I would. Its perfect to spend 6 months in there. But I think 6 months its enough for Osnabrück. Although It has everything (shopping places, clubs, cafes etc. ), some people around me thought that its too small to live. It is so quiet and there is no life in the street after 8 pm except students.
What is the food like?
Ok, we are talking about German food. There is not much. But Osnabrück has too many restaurants from Italy, China, Turkish, Spanish. And in the Uni we have Mensa. I'm quiet sure you can always find something to eat in Mensa.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Osnabrück?
I had to register from the page of Uni for my dormitory. I had paid 400 euro for deposit before I went.
How much does it cost to live in Osnabrück?
I paid 270 euro for my accommodation and I cooked in my kitchen. It was around 600 with the parties for me.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes there is language courses to teach you the basics. And the people mostly knows English. So its easy to communicate. But German is not easy to learn.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Osnabrück from your city?
I used plane and then the train to travel to Osna.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Osnabrück?
I think Neo was the best club in Osna. But Its kind of expensive.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Osnabrück?
There was Losteria kind of expensive but pizzas were really good. If you want to eat cheap but good pizzas my recommend is Pinokyo. And there was a Spanish restaurant, which name is Tapas or something like that, i think it was cheap and was a good choice to try Spanish food. And of course Turkish kebap. You have to try MC döner!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Osna has an old part and modern part. So Its like you are living in two different world. But also you have a semester ticket which allows you to travel free in Lower Saxony!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Osnabrück in the future?
If you want to improve your language you have to try to find some German friends. If you are there to fun just hang out with the internationals they will show you the way!
