Olsztyn, Poland by Dominika Paulina
What is it like to live in Olsztyn? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Olsztyn is a nice city to live, work & study. It's not a huge city, with good public transport connections day or night. At night there are only two buses going through all the city so it takes time but what I do recommend is to take a taxi (preferably "Green taxi" company, I guess the cheapest one, giving you the opportunity of making card payment which is not available in other companies).
However, by living in Kortowo (University Campus located there) you've got an easy access to everything and if you're determined after the party at night, you can get home from city center in 15mins approx. We've got two huge shopping centers here, old town where lots of pubs and restaurants are located and the city is surrounded by lots of lakes and forests.
To have fun and enjoy the time of your studies you don't even have to leave Kortowo. There is everything in here - shops, restaurants, clubs, pubs, accommodation, and the area is by the lake where on the beach on sunny days lots of people relax at a barbecue :)
What is the student lifestyle like in Olsztyn?
There are two main areas you can spend your free time in. Kortowo University Campus or Old Town. I recommend the second one where everybody will find something interesting! I personally like Sowa Pub in the castle where various concerts and events take place (for native Spanish speakers Latino Noche not to be missed! ). And the best way of spending the night when you can't decide which pub to enter is to start a Pub Crawl :)
How much does it cost to live in Olsztyn?
Quoting my Spanish family visiting me in Olsztyn: "we'll be coming here for dinners, it's cheaper to take a plane here with the whole family, eat and come back than go for a dinner in Spain" well, that's probably because of the currency we've got but anyway, as you can see, you're able to earn your living in Poland :)
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Olsztyn? Is there any advice you can give?
Definitely go and see the place :) some time ago they kept saying some districts are unfavorable and may be a bit dangerous but now Olsztyn is said to be a really calm city.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You should definitely try our Polish cuisine - pierogi, schabowy, mizeria, bigos, gołąbki... and many others!
What places would you recommend visiting in Olsztyn?
Old town, city beach, Kortowo.
Is it good to eat out in Olsztyn? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
- Malta Cafe - fresh & healthy food.
- Green Way - vegetarian super cheap restaurant (€2-3 per meal).
- Česká Hospoda - typical for Czech Republic food (vey heavy) and beer.
- House Cafe - perfect cakes and coffee, international environment.
And so on.
What advice would you give future students heading to Olsztyn?
Just be open-minded, smile and don't worry if you don't know the language :)
