Erasmus experience in Nuremberg, Germany - by Hugo

Why did you choose to go to Nuremberg, Germany?

I had previously completed an internship at the Adidas world headquarters in Herzogenaurach (a small town not far from Nuremberg).

How long was your internship? How much funding did you receive?

The internship lasted 6 months. I didn't receive any funding but I wasn't really well informed about this.

What is student life like in Nuremberg?

The atmosphere for students is great! Germans certainly like to party. There are bars all over the town as well as good nightclubs: party clubs, old school hip hop style clubs, even karaoke! (But that's not my scene)

Would you recommend town and university of Nuremberg to other students?

This was the first time that I had been to Germany and, coming from Paris, I was amazed at how safe I felt there. No one bothers anyone; everyone is polite and respectful of all the rules. No one - and I mean no one - crosses the road when the red man is showing which I found really weird. It's a bit like an unwritten rule.

How was the food in Germany?

Before I came here I didn't know much about the food apart from the fact that it was fatty and included sausages, pastries etc... This isn't false, but in France, we don't eat beef stew and snails every day. And it's the same here, there are lots of very nice restaurants at very affordable prices. Despite being used to gourmet food, I wasn't disappointed here. The food in supermarkets is also unbelievably cheap and you can get a pint in a bar for only 3€...

Did you find it difficult to find accommodation in Nuremberg?

A little, you have to find it in advance and can't be scared to join Facebook groups to find flat-shares (the best way to find something for a low price (you can expect to pay between 350 and 450 euros for a nice flat-share)).

You have to be patient and determined, and also need to spend time trawling the internet.

How is the cost of living in Nuremberg?

What cost?

As I said, a pint is 3€! Food in supermarkets is twice as cheap as in France, particularly meat (more specifically, pork).

Nightclub entrance: 8-10€ but some are free.

Taxis are a bit expensive so it's better to get a bike.

The town also has a great metro, tram and bus system!

How are the language courses? Did you attend courses organised by the university?

I didn't take any courses. I was curious about the language and did try to learn a few words, but I couldn't pretend that I spoke German. "Keine spreche deutsch" could be a useful phrase for people with the same level of German as me!

What is the cheapest way to get to Nuremberg from your town?

The night bus.

Go on the website "goeuro". This site compares the cost of different modes of transport and helps you find the cheapest. Often, the train is quicker but the bus is cheaper.

Where do you recommend in Nuremberg for partying?

The town centre! There are lots of people in the street.

The Mach 1 (pronounced "Marr Ein" appears to be the best club (hip hop), the King Lui is also not bad as is the G&G (but this is only for over 25's and I'm 23). The indabhan (literally "in the train station", because the club is located in the Nuremberg main station) is quite good, too. You'll also find dozens and dozens of small and large bars and restaurants in the centre.

And where is best to eat in Nuremberg?

Istanbul (the best doner kebab in Nuremberg) or the Hot Taco (amazing tacos, great setting - you feel like you're in your living room -, nice music and a predominantly young crowd.

Which cultural spots would you recommend?

The town is a cultural visit in itself, it's really beautiful. You also have the old Nuremberg Castle.

Any advice for future students in Nuremberg?

Go out whether you feel like it or not. Nothing will come to you if you don't go out and find them to take part in the adventures. To come and study here, you need to be adventurous. Keep this in mind and you'll have a great time!
